One thing that I learned early on from my first teacher was respect. I may not approve of things other blackbelts do or say, but there is no need for me to get involved in gossip or slander. I assisted a class led by a 3rd Dan TKD, who talked about a tournament where he "kicked this guy's a**" to win in sparring. I didn't agree with it, it was very indicative of his age (21), but it was his class. However, I have also competed in various tournaments, taken trophies and medals in those contests, but, my example is that I acknowledge the skills and spirit of those that challenged me, rather than talking about how much better I was than they were. Sometimes it is appropriate to respect the rank, even if you don't respect the person. I've never competed against someone I didn't respect either way, though I have run into artists who I only respected their senior rank. Perhaps leading by example is a good way to help junior students gain a stronger grasp on the art they are studying. Keith 2nd Dan WTF Keith F. From the time I started in 1986 in Norris system TSD to my Cho Dan test in the Soo Bahk Do Moo Duk Kwan, about 12 years had elapsed (due to Navy moves, lack of TSD in places I moved, etc.). I was ecstatic - I learned the results the night of the test. My close friend also passed, and due to back surgery, his time to Cho Dan was about 16 years! I'd put our reactions right up there with the celebrations you see on the tube for the Super Bowl - at least that's how it felt inside. Then the feeling of satisfaction upon receiving the belt, the uniform, and the certificate was immense. In a system as old as the Moo Duk Kwan, 55 this year, it felt really great to become part of a legacy that includes so many great practitioners of Tang Soo Do/Soo Bahk Do Moo Duk Kwan. The next best was watching both of my sons do the same, my oldest in front of Master Hwang H.C., head of the U.S. Federation. It's a special time and should certainly prove to be so for you. It's a humbling (or is it an humbling?) experience as well. Look forward to it! Soo Bahk!!
