Will, I was going to hook you up with a Sin Moo instructor that used to teach in Pinole (just north of where you will be), but it seems he has moved. I just called Grandmaster JI to see if he had the new address/phone for this instructor, Master Francisco Abungan, but he did not. Sorry... I become confused very easy when title's and terms are used. In Korea a 4th Dan means you are a teacher you are allowed to teach and promote someone to 1st Dan.Also you have to have a (certificate of appointment) which is a teaching license, Not a BLACK BELT this does not mean you are an instructor. You can not receive this certificate without attending the instructors course in Korea this is for 8 weeks 6 days a week. Not a two weeks vacation and you are required to live in the Dojang. It also accepts no-one under third Dan Rank.Master in Korea or Junior Master is 5th Dan ,And 6th is Master and Master instructor is 7th and 8th Dan this is how it was when I graduated from the instructors course in 1982 certificate number 79-82 as one of the first Non-Korean's to attend and graduate this pertains to the KHA.Also WHF considers 5th Dan a master. And anything under is an instructor. It just snapped one night as I landed following a lateral jump. However I have *not* had ACL reconstruction. I have been through a program of exercises over a period of 6-8 months and now have few problems at all. There are some muscles around the knee that can apparently take over the job. For a while it was weak, and occasionally the knee would give way when landing, but these days I hardly notice it at all. The mental side has taken a lot to overcome. Even now I hesitate to do a spinning kick where I will land on my right leg, but I am improving, and sometimes the fear just disappears and I can do anything I want. Note that my orthopod was the one who suggested that I did not need reconstruction. Last year, during our stay in Germany, together with my friend running a school there we came to an idea: we decided to form an international team comprising of Polish and German kids from the "Dan Taekwondo" and "SV Gehrden" school, co-operating since over a year. Last weekend, the newly formed "Euro-Team" entered the "Meran Cup" in Germany. And I must say I was very glad to see all these kids wearing the team T-shirts all the day and proudly waving the banner made from Polish and German national flags. To hear all these voices chanting "Euro-Team, Euro-Team!" was one of the nicest moments of my career. Even with all that nervous atmosphere on the event (definitely NOT perfectly run, but still very nice) we felt we were part of something special. And at the very end, it was just great to see all the 41 kids of the "Euro-Team" holding the giant Grand Champion Team trophy! I saw another side of Taekwondo that day, far from the professional Olympic teams (not meant disrespectful here), money and political issues, I saw kids from two countries becoming one team and having a lot of fun at what they did together. And that was really something worth working for. We don't show all chokes either. We have been to classes and seminars where they have done these and we have come back home with severe headaches from them (some of my students and myself). I had one neckcrank done on me one time and I swear it impaired my walking for 3 days (I could walk ... but it was painful and funny to watch). So I have baned them from our school. But other than that ... BJJ is just great to learn. We learned most of our stuff from the Gracies school and the Pedro Carvalho school. For breath control try the following...(it's actually the correct way for breathing and I have been teaching it for a couple of decades as I was taught) When doing forms especially...DON'T hold your breath on the execution of techniques...exhale with each and every step/technique executed...inhale as you begin the step/technique; exhale throughout the step/technique...You can either do this silently or do what most of us do and make an audible sound as you exhale...like blowing out a candle; whether it be a quick exhale or a long drawn out exhale...your exhale should end as the step/technique ends...some choose to make a loud audible sound and some a quieter yet still audible sound...this will/should help you maintain your breath control, your focus, your concentration, your stamina, improve your timing, and increase your power and snap...remember...at the end of each form...you should be "Mildly Exhausted"...panting slightly, but not heavy with a very light to near sweat...as you perform more forms in sequence, your breathing should not change though your sweating will increase significantly... This is the same practice to use during sparring as well...DON'T hold your breath...Inhale prior to delivery and exhale upon delivery and upon receiving a blow, strike, or attack...this will allow you to absorb the attack with less impact to you as well as deliver a much more powerful strike or blow to your opponent...it's not an easy thing to learn or train your body and mind to do when you are in the middle of fighting, but like everything else...it just takes practice...and practice...and practice...and more practice... Give this a try and let me know how it works for you and if you see any difference in your performance...good luck! Pil Seung (sounds like a singing aspirin...doesn't it?) The One and Only... You have to remember that each move is open to intepretation. What works for one body type may not work for another. One way of looking at this move is that the block knocks the opponent off balance(as it should), so the usual reflex is for the leg to come up. The palm block knocks it down, forcing them even further off balance and then the spear-hand finishes. Other people see it as more of a grab than a block, to move the guard down and open up the solar-plexus for the strike. Different people look at it in different ways, and for gradings you'll have to do it by your instructors book, at least until you go up the ranks far enough.
