For a change of pace and post, I thought I would drop a shameless plug in. At my webpage, I put up a terminology under the TKD section. The list is almost complete, and I hope you'll find it useful...of course, for those of you who are shaky on the romanization, I made .WAV files of myself pronouncing the phrases in Korean...and I tried to say them as slowly and clearly as possible. I do have to go back and redo some .WAV files to try and conserve space, so feel free to visit my page and sample the terminology...of course, you do have to do a little hunting... http://kenochi_timberland.tripod.com/ ===== ~~Kim Jones *ladytimberland@yahoo.com* ICQ: 52828008 AOL: Lady Timberland "The path of excess leads to the tower of wisdom." Semi-free sparring is when the opponents exchange a limited number of attacks and defenses (usually the attacks are limited to either two or three per person). >I'm not sure if this is what you meant by the ITF semi-free >sparring, but >it sounds like it might be similar. There is also at >least one >empty-handed sparring form in KSW, gun dae ree hyung probably also >misspelled), taught at 1st degree. Is this empty-handed sparring form choreographed or more free style like the staff form? A lot of Chinese systems have two-person forms that are totally choreographed, each person basically performing a seperate pattern. Interestingly, most of the Kung Fu guys I know just know HALF of a form! For example, in the spear versus 3-section staff form they would only get taught one of the weapons. I assume they'll be taught the other half later but not so far. >There are a lot of master-level weapons demonstrations in KSW, which >are >typically fully choreographed (they're demos, not sparring). This sounds a lot like the Chinese two person forms I was talking about earlier. Taekwon, Chris "Every experience of beauty points to infinity." Scott ------------------------------ From: MichaelChoi@aol.com Date: Wed, 12 Apr 2000 18:43:35 EDT Subject: the_dojang: GM Hwang Kee & GM Yong Sool Choi I have read in various places that GM Hwang Kee trained with the late founder Hapkido, Doju-nim Yong Sool Choi. Can anyone verify that? From what I heard of pre-Korea Taekwondo Association Korean Karate, the Moo Duk Kwan practised more Ho Shin Sool (Self-Defense) than Chung Do Kwan. Chung Do Kwan supposively spent more time on Dae-ryun (sparring). From the self defense techniques that I've seen Moo Duk Kwan and modern WTF Taekwondo, it is similar to Hapkido. I chose to study Hapkido because their self defense techniques are more precise with more depth than the self defense taught in the WTF/Kukkiwon curriculum, in my opinion. I'm just starting to learn Hapkido black belt techniques; the advanced black belt techniques of hapkido require a "fluent, working knowledge" of basic color belt hapkido techniques in order to execute the complex but awesome techniques. Believe me, it's not easy, but it works.
