Kim, Jae-joon is one of Hwang Kee's highest ranking students, Dan #38. He calls his school "Kim's Karate & Hapkido Academy". I asked about that one time, and an old member of his original school way back in Michigan said he eventually brought in a Hapkido instructor who was also teaching at his dojang, so the name reflected that. Later, when the Hapkido instructor had moved on, the name was never changed. I don't believe he teaches any Hapkido now, and he doesn't teach any self defense that incorporates HKD in them that I know of. It is left more up to each instructor. His Dan tests only have TSD techniques, forms, one-steps, sparring and breaking - no Hoshinsul and no HKD techniques. He has also never mentioned anything about Hwang Kee training with Choi and Hwang Kee never mentioned it in his "The History of Moo Duk Kwan". Can anyone verify that? Master HC Hwang mentioned once that this was not the case. Ray Terry raymail@hpwsrt.cup.hp.com ------------------------------ From: "Moja Kwan - C. Richards" Date: Wed, 12 Apr 2000 23:52:25 -0400 Subject: the_dojang: Ho Shin Sul <> Hello Michael, Good to see you posting again. I've been training in Korean TKD/TSD since 1985 and hold a 3rd Dan in TSD. Around 1994 I started training in HKD Sun Moo Kwan under Master James Allison. I must have had every Yellow Belt and higher tell me to relax, and stop trying to use strength to get through a technique. I am now 5th Gup (Blue) . Sometimes, the only way I can get circular motion co-ordinated in my hands and feet is to not breath at all (at least with a new HKD technique). Very humbling experience, kinda like having Neal Pert hand you a set of drum sticks. From my college days of Jhoon Rhee TKD, I can't say that I remeber any formal class time on Hoshinsul. One of my previous TSD master instructors said in *the old days* they (masters) just said OK now we're doing Hapkido techniques, or might have called it Kwan Je Sul (sp?). Unfortunately, I was not even a thought in the pre 1961 days, so I can't speak to that. Master MacHenry and I had a thread going on TSD and as far as I know TSD always had Hoshinsul/Kwan Je Sul, but not any of the"Royal Palace Martial Arts" like rope techniques, double daggers and/or arresting/come-along techniques (jump in here Mac). I have had the pleasure of seeing Master Allison string several, supposedly basic Gup level techniques/concepts into an advanced sequence, and experienced the effectiveness first hand. At his level, there is NO question in the students mind as to the effectiveness of the technique. IMHO some of the advanced techniques are FAR from easy (including the falls), but when applied by someone with a *fluent working knowledge* it is very effective. Enjoying the path, Charles Richards Moja Kwan TSD http://msnhomepages.talkcity.com/YosemiteDr/mojakwan/ ------------------------------ From: Ray Terry Date: Wed, 12 Apr 2000 22:06:03 -0700 (PDT) Subject: the_dojang: DoJu JI seminar?
