I do not want to go off topic too much but I believe the questions do affect martial artists who carry training weapons and travel a bit. If your driving down the road and you are stopped for speeding what constitutes permissible search and seizure of your car, e.g., if you were stopped for speeding, then the officer orders you out of your car and then searches your car--must he first have a warrant, consent, and so forth. Can he merely believe you have a weapon which like a club is clearly in plain view. This may be difficult to answer based on different hypothetical and jurisdictional laws. Curious. Thank you for the explanation on Korean words' pronunciation, Arthur. It's much more clear to me now. 2. On the "carrying weapons" thing, I agree completly with Mr Saporta. If you feel that you need a weapon to protect yourself, carry a gun. Clubs, flashlights, sticks, etc., aren't so good for this thing. If you are in your car, OK, you can carry them, but when you're not? You can't walk down the street with any of those things. If you do, people might think you're crazy. Chance for anyone to be assaulted in the street is much, much bigger than while driving a car. Also, if a person that attacks you has a gun, which is very usual nowadays, your "cold" weapons won't help you at all. The conclusion is: if you think you need a weapon to protect yourself, get a licence, learn how to shoot, and buy a gun. Much more practical, effective and easier to carry than an iron bar. Another thing; if you have a gun with yourself, a person that attacks you might change his mind very likely, so you'll avoid use of force. If you have a club or something, you will have to use it, which can be very dangerous because you could easily kill the attacker. With a gun, you can always just shoot his leg. Well, really the only thing that stops me from training is illness or even menstrual cramping. I can hear the male population going, "ohhhhhh Lord" right now, but only when I can't move at all (after taking 3 motrin to try and ease the pain) and it hurts just thinking, I stay on the electric blanket belly down until I can fall asleep. Now, provided that I'm not cramping to the point of incoherence (it DOES happen)... ...if my mother is stressing me out, something at school happened, friends are acting like jerks, or it's just a plain bad day, I put in the aggressive tape I made by recording all the fast and heavy-hitting songs (stuff like Stabbing Westward's "Everything I Touch", Third Eye Blind's "Anything", and "Parallel Universe" by the Red Hot Chili Peppers to name some) or grab my mix tape of Bone thugs-n-harmony. I grab my things, plug in my earphones, hit Play, and walk out of the house down to the bus stop. I keep listening until I get to the Main Post gate (at which point I remove my earphones to avoid getting yelled at), have my ID card checked, put earphones back on, and once the bus stops, I walk into the gym, normally through the basketball court, to get to the training room. By that point, I've calmed down greatly from whatever was stressing me, stretch out, and go about class. When class finishes, I feel greatly relieved of any stress. That state of mind normally continues for up to 48 hours if I'm lucky. The little tiny voice that keeps telling you, "aww, you can train some other day" needs to be ignored, really. Training is the best way to let go of stress (besides writing poetry, er, for me, that is.) ===== ~~Kim Jones *ladytimberland@yahoo.com* ICQ: 52828008 AOL: Lady Timberland "The path of excess leads to the tower of wisdom." What age do you feel is appropriate to allow an assistant instructor to run warm-ups. By this I mean the calisthenics portion, not the running of the actual techniques of class curriculum. Do you let non-black belts be "assistants"? I ask do to the visibility of my classes to the public and parents. Letting a younger than adult conduct some resposibilities maybe be misunderstood by passer bys or parents not familiar with a higher belt in a lower rank class. What do you think? A. If you > are in your car, OK, you can carry them, but when you're not? You can't > walk down the street with any of those things. The problem with getting a CCW is that many of us cannot. e.g. I cannot obtain a CCW here in SF Bay Area of California. However with the proper training (e.g. Eskrima) a stick or knife are excellent weapons. Now, I don't necessarily want to take a knife to a gun fight, but since I cannot legally carry a gun everywhere I go, I carry a knife everywhere I go. > because you could easily kill the attacker. With a gun, you can always > just shoot his leg. Sorry, but -horrible- idea. Any firearms trainer will make it clear that you NEVER try to shoot someone in the leg/arm/finger. (1) You only shoot if your life, or someone else's life, is in grave danger. (2) When you shoot, shoot for center of mass (the center of the chest), or in rare situations the pelvis area to break the pelvis. 98% of the time, simply pulling the gun will halt the crime, i.e. guns usually stop crimes/attacks without even having to be fired.
