Subject: the_dojang: Re: King of World Tourney
I just spoke with some friends who inquired in Korea as to the King of World
Tournament. They indicated there was no such tourney. As for the article in
TKD Times, I have seen some things in this magazine that were questionable.
For example there was this nice article on a gentleman who had become a monk,
and featured a pic of a gentle looking bald Korean man. Under the man's hand
was a pack of marlboro's and a friend, who saw the pic, identified the
location as a bar in which he had been. So much for vows. =)
After pondering this tourney more in depth I remembered that the gentleman
from richmond, had a gala event here a few years ago to celebrate his 25th
year anniversary teaching in Richmond. I was present at this event. After
looking at this picture in TKD Times it struck me that I had seen at least
one of the other two men before. If I'm not mistaken, both of them were also
performing in the gala event. Now what are the odds of this occuring? And, if
this tournament was in Korea, for grandmasters only I might add, then why
have none of my Korean sources heard of this tournament?
I am glad my bs alarm wasn't the only one to go off. Thanks for all your
help. I guess the conclusion is gonna have to be that this was not a
sanctioned event by any body, except perhaps a private one.
If anyone comes up with information from a more reputable source than tkd
times, please let me know. Not that I have anything against TKD Times, but
they do get rather busy, and it is unlikely they would check on every item
submitted for publication. That would require a rather large staff, and would
not be cost effective.
Once again thanks all,
Frank

Today, I had the pleasure of standing half way up heartbreak hill in Newton,
MA, to cheer on Grand Master Young Kwon of Teuksburry, MA, (8th Dan
Taekwondo, 8th dan Hapkido, and former professional Tae kick boxer) in the
Boston Marathon. He has run the Boston Marathon every year for the last ten
or so years. He runs with his acupuncture needles in his pocket just in case
he needs them. This year was his last. He is about 55 years old, and half way
up heart break hill, some 19 miles into the race, he looked like he was
really enjoying himself, smiling and waving, looking very fresh. How many
masters at this age could do this? Grand Master Kwon was running with Master
Robert Anktil of New Hampshire, who looked great too. Master Kwon takes on
these challenges in order to inspire his students to pursue life long
training. It was certainly inspiring to me. Jose'

Hopefully everyone around the DC area will be at the seminar hosted by my
teacher and friend, Master J. R. West (8th dan) and his most talented wife
Master Renee West (5th dan). If you do not make it and you can, shame on
you. No reason not to go. I will not be able to attend this time as I did to
the last one in MD as I am saving up for the trip to Korea this summer with
these two and others; nevertheless, if you get a chance to go and work out -
go! I promise you will have a good time. Do not go if you like to sit and
listen to teachers talk, or you like to stand around and watch others
practice. Go if you like to learn and practice. Hope to see you next time. I
flew from Cinti to DC last time, and I hope to see everyone at the next one.
You will not be dissapointed!!!!!!!

Thank you all for all the replies I received......My daughter has also
voiced her opinion and she said she wouldn't dream of going to a
different dojang and wants to continue with Master Lee......
So as a good mom should....I will bow out and let Master Lee do his
job. I know there will be a few of you who will disagree but my
daughter knows best what she wants and as long as she wants to continue
and is enjoying it I will let her stay.
Thank you again for all the input I received.
