I must say all this BICKERING about ADD, AHD, ect... about not accepting those on Medications and those who think they should really demeans this Digest. It has been my thought that we all come together to DISCUSS issues and topics, not FIGHT or BICKER about who's right or wrong. This Bickering/Fighting amoungst the martial arts is part of the problem why many in the general public do not trust us. We do not have to agree on every little thing, but open and outright indignation about someone else's views ??? I really thought, and I really did think this, that we were beyond the old views of "I'm right and everyone else is wrong" We are what we are, Martial Artists. And because of this we all tend to have strong convictions as to what we do is "Right" but it should also mean that we are open-minded enough and "Humble" enough to listen to anothers views and accept them for what they are... just different views. I hope we can get past this "problem" and get bck to discussing techniques and training habits. the WriorDragn ------------------------------ From: MissIllona@aol.com Date: Fri, 21 Apr 2000 14:49:03 EDT Subject: the_dojang: Fad MA In a message dated 4/21/00 7:21:57 AM Pacific Daylight Time, the_dojang-owner@hpwsrt.cup.hp.com writes: << Of course John Graden (NAPMA) explained it a lot better. I would also suggest you look up Sensei Buzz Durkin in the mid-west. I understand he has a 300+ traditional, commercial dojang(oops dojo - he teaches Kenpo I believe), with NO CARDIO and NO PEE-WEES, and students that have been training with him for decades... >> I have dropped receiving my packages from the NAPMA group to an every month thing to every 3 months based on the fact I have been getting bored of their fad stuff they have been trying to introduce to the MA dojo owners. I have written them, I have called them numerous times and talked to different people each time (this time Kathy Malor) ... seems to be to no avail. Pretty soon I will be dropping them for good and I have been with them since they first came out. They don't come out and say it to my face ... but in all the written stuff and videos and cassettes they send out ... the message is there. I am old fashion and out of touch of what Americans want. They want Tae Bo, they want classes for kids who can barely walk and talk, they don't want to wear uniforms, they want to wear shoes at all times, we don't really teach self defense because, my gosh, we are only a karate school, so we must put in EZ Defense, etc. Sorry, but I am not a fad MA school. I am teaching what my instructors have taught me (and thank you very much, but it is filled with lots of self defense!) and what I have gone out and further learned since I have opened up these doors. I am constantly learning. Tae Bo is not for us ... we get that in our regular workouts here. Teaching wee kids was OK for awhile but .... none of the parents took it seriously so my workload was twice as hard as teaching an older child and the parents didn't want to pay much for it since they were so small ... we get plenty of self defense in our school and I teach it to everyone including the kids ... as for working out in shoes, we do that when we go to the park or the beach or out back in the alleyway when we have those kinds of workouts. We also teach with the lights off and a couple of candles burning so everyone can get a sense of what it is like to defend themselves in low lighting. I like what I am doing here ... I don't want to be a millionaire ... having 300 students is not my goal ... having 25 staff members is not my idea of a perfect life -- I like (no, I love) teaching and intermingling with my students, parents, their little brothers and sisters, etc. If I had a large amount of staff ... it would take me away from alot of this. When I talked to one person on the staff at NAPMA (and I am not going to mention names) they agreed that getting and maintaining a large school is hard work ... and that they themselves have cut back on the amount of students they have in their school because it simply was too big. For some this is a good thing and they thrive on this. To me ... no. It is not for me and I don't want it. But trying to convince some people of this fact is like pulling teeth out of a crocodile !! Sorry to go on about this ... but I have had it trying to explain my goals to some people and then having them say I am old fashioned and I must be a small school owner and I am just making excuses as to why I am not rich or my school isn't any bigger than it is. From now on I am going to remain quiet ... and just smile and shake my head and walk away. Their path is not my path ... I've been gone for quite some time, but I'm back once again. I'm a member of a university club that usually loses about 80% of it's attendance during the summer when people go home for break. After talking with a lot of people, I've noticed that a lot of people seem to have difficulty finding Hapkido when they go home. I'm now trying to compile a list of schools, adresses and phone numbers to help people find schools in their area. If anyone could send me some information to my personal account about their school or where I could find listings online, please do so. The kinds of information that I'm looking for are: Name, Address including town and state, phone number, BRIEF description of your curriculum, affiliation and any other pertinent information. Thanks a bunch.
