He is from Poland and studied under ITF rules. Our school is WTF, and he speaks little English but when our master uses the korean terms, he is still lost. He says the korean terminology he used in Poland is different to what we use. Is that so, WTF terms are different from ITF? If so, does anyone know where I can get a list of both korean terms to help him out? What plagues Korean martial arts in the United States is the lack of recognition of one's teachers. Some Korean masters earn the respect and loyalty of their students. Unfortunately, other Korean masters order their students to be loyal to them. I agree with you that it is very odd (or wrong) that many Korean masters do not talk about their teacher. Some do. In Joe Hyam's book "Zen in the Martial Arts," he recalls that Bong Soo Han would relate tales of Yong Sool Choi to his students. Unfortunately, I think too many Korean masters' egos are so inflated that they won't recognize their teachers. Sincerely, Michael Choi ------------------------------ From: MichaelChoi@aol.com Date: Sat, 22 Apr 2000 23:29:50 EDT Subject: the_dojang: Kuk Sool in Korea I usually refer to the style that is taught by the Suh/Seo brothers as Kuk Sool not Kuk Sool Won because I read somewhere that it is supposed to be called Kuk Sool. Let's see... Kuk Ki Won and Kuk Sool Won. If we break it down... Kuk (national) Ki (sorry, I don't know) and Won (Institute, Center). Then, Kuk (national) Sool (technique) and Won (Institute). Kuk Sool Won would imply a place or location. So naturally, Kuk Sool would refer to the body of techniques. (If anyone really wants to discuss this, that's fine with me, but I'd rather talk about something else.) I really disagree with the claim that Seo, In Sun combined Taek Kyon and Yoo Kwon Sool to form Hapkido and I am sure that plenty of people will agree, including Grandmasters Ji Han-jae, Kim Chong S. in L.A., and Suh Bok-sub. (Jesse, thanks for mentioning that ludicrous claim.) Last year when I was vacationing in Korea (namely Taegu, Pusan, and Cheju Island), I did see a few Kuk Sool schools. They all said Kuk Sool Hapkido. Why does Kuk Sool need to piggy-back on Hapkido with regards to their name? Hmm....
