(Kwang, Sik Myung, Bong, Soo Han exct.) It is my understanding that both of these asteemed teachers were not regular students of the Founder Choi, Yong Sool but seminar participants.>> Good question. I don't claim to have any more insight into Hapkido history than anyone else on this list. But here is what I think. GM Ji has told me that when he was young, he could be very mean. What he taught in the early days was fighting, and not so much philosophy. And he fought a lot. Here is more of my "opinion": Some of GM Ji's early students may have felt that they were not treated as they expected to be treated. Also, it is only human instinct to want to seek out the teacher of your teacher, because he would certainly have more knowledge than your teacher. I have heard of many cases today where a student will betray his teacher and abandon him to get closer to a grand master for their own selfish reasons. To these I say, let your conscious me your guide. Also, GM Ji was very young when he opened his first dojang in Seoul. Some of his student who are now grand masters were older than him. It's good to see more Hapkido stuff on the list, and in such a respectful manner. V/R, Rick Nabors ------------------------------ From: MichaelChoi@aol.com Date: Sun, 23 Apr 2000 21:05:49 EDT Subject: the_dojang: Bong Soo Han's teacher Rick, you are right that Bong Soo Han did train under Grandmaster Ji, Han Jae and that he received his 9th degree through him. (Isn't it a little odd that Han holds a 10th degree now when one of his teacher's, namely Ji, is still alive?) According to Dr. Kimm's Hapkido Bible, Han also trained with Choi, Yong-Sool and claimed him as his teacher. I also think that Han should credit Ji as his teacher, but perhaps Han sees Choi and not Ji his ultimate Mentor. I don't know. But here is what I think. GM Ji has told me > that when he was young, he could be very mean. What he taught in the early > days was fighting, and not so much philosophy. And he fought a lot. GM Choi was supposedly very mean, also. Of course in the late 1940s, 50s and early 60s many/most martial arts students in Korea were beat by their instructors. Hwang Kee, Gen. Choi, etc, they all taught that way. Many still carry the scars they 'earned' in those days.
