I was only a lowly Cho Dan at the time so I paused when > several youth students ran right by me without acknowledging me. I don't understand. What should they have done when they passed you? I've been at schools that are very informal but there's still obvious respect for the seniors, and especially for the master. I've been at other schools where I, a thirty-two year old guy at the time, was supposed to bow deeply and say 'thank you, sir' every time some high school kid with a black belt addressed me. I don't know that the art there was any better because of this than at any other place. We've all heard horror stories of masters requiring cult-like obeisance from their students (especially the lower-ranking students who are coughing up thousands of dollars for the privilege of groveling). I know you're not talking about that level of respect, but at age thirty eight, I'm concerned with improving my personal abilities in the art and in treating others with the same respect with which I treat others at work and in the street. Yes, when my instructor or a senior black belt shows me a technique, or after I finish a session or technique with another Hapkido sunsu, I'll bow slightly at the waist and slap the outsides of my thighs. And of course we bow to the flags at the beginning and end of class and when we enter and leave the dojang, and bow to the instructor at the end. But come to think of it, at my Korean dojang in 1986, we didn't do much more than that. I have had the pleasure of training under him during his seminars at the HKD dojang I belong to. He is a man of great experience and knowledge concerning the Korean arts, as well as others. If you have history questions, this is the man to ask. I'm working on a comparitive study of the hyung as they changed through time. These books are very hard to get a hold of and I'd be happy to pay for copying and postage.
