Ditto, and I agree. ;-) >> I am curious; is this based on just personal preference, or something more tangible like better utility superiority in sparring, or more practical in a brawl. Is there a philosophical difference? To my eye, for example, the ITF chjon ji (color-belt) poomsae appear to be both more interesting, and more demanding to perform than either the palgwe or taegeuk series I have learned being a WTFer. The black belt forms from both systems, however, seem to be quite comparable. So why the preference the ITF methodology? SESilz BTW, I have seen WTF dojang(s?) that have almost zero in common with one-another, but have training that looks more typical of perhaps ATA, ITF, tangsudo or shotokan, for that matter. My awkward point is that, at least in America, where there is so much cross-style pollination, it is quite hard to say what a particular system may like when you set foot in any given dojang. They've all been training with him for ~45 years. Are there really 150 people in the WTF with 45 years of experience? (There probably are people in the WTF with that much experience - but 150?) >> Folks: The answer to this question is an easy YES. Surprised? Don't be. I say this because so very many masters, from Korea in particular, began training between their fifth to tenth birthday, and almost certainly before they were 20. There are many Koreans who were born in the 1940s and began serious martial art practice after the Korean War. Add the 45 years you speak of, and they are now only 50 to 65 years of age. I alone have met scores, if not hundreds of taekwondo men who are in this age range (whether they admit it or not!). Hell, who do you think buys up all that Jet Black Grecian Formula hair color? It may seem shocking that there are be this many men - and a few ladies - walking around who have been practicing taekwondo before it was even called taekwondo - 45 years or longer. But look around yourself at the next USTU or, better yet, WTF Board of Governors' Meeting. Once you mentally erase the Grecian Formula you will see what I mean. Furthermore, in 10 or 15 more years, there will be a huge group of non-Korean born taekwondoin with 40 to 50 years of experience under their belts. Damn, if I don't croak first, I'll be one of 'em,,, I just hope I won't be dyeing my hair. West Hapkido Seminar= 29 April 2000 Sunday Morning. Maryland. April 30,2000. Off to the Carlisle Spring Car Show in Carlisle, PA. today. Prior to drooling over classic cars I wanted to pass on to various list readers a wonderful Hapkido seminar I attended on April 29, 2000 at Global Hapkido, Hempstead, MD. Having attended a few seminars, including Kuk Sool Won seminars, I can tell you that this was a fantastic seminar. With the permission of Master West, I plan to do a complete review later in the week on the seminar content. This is just a note to Master West and his instructors for providing an outstanding seminar. This was a "hands on" seminar. Everyone paired up with a partner and various Hapkido techniques were demonstrated first by the Master himself, Master West. Then you and your partner practiced the same technique. Prior to this procedure Master West discussed the motion of Hapkido and the importance of body position, and key signs to watch in your opponent as you correctly do the technique. First, Kudos to Master West and his instructors. There was no attitude and you were walked through the techniques by Master West and his instructors. Master West and his instructors made on the spot corrections of your technique, your hand positions, how to improve your technique, how to employ the technique (using helpful visuals to show you the range of motion you should employ), and the purpose behind the technique. Second, you can see that Master West generally wants to impart the knowledge he has learned and garnered through years of practice. This practice has been supplemented by the lineage of outstanding Korean (and other) Masters he has studied with. I enjoyed the seminar and realized that I could learn a significant amount from Master West and his instructors. A true class act. Master West, et. al., thanks for the great seminar. You have my Hapkido juices starting to flow again. Ken McD... __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Talk to your friends online and get email alerts with Yahoo! First, which units did Hong Hi Choi command during the Korean War and in which battles? Second, what is his date of rank as a "General", which is a four-star rank in the Army of the Republic of Korea, just as it is in the United States Army? Joseph F. Your a lucid and logical writer. Keep up the splendid writing. It takes a lot more courage to write your thoughts and beliefs on various subjects. You open yourself to criticism and other speculation. It is much easier to merely sit back and hide within the forum list not taking any position on any issue. If you write something expect a different opinion, sleep on it, get over it, and move on. Just keep the thoughts and ideas flowing. You will see that your thoughts are agreed upon my many...
