The instructor was trying Jiu-Jitsu techniques. Focusing on only 2 techniques, re: parallel lapel grab and cross over grab. He demonstrated the two techniques and told the students to practice. I pulled the instructor over to the side and said, "Let me show you a nice technique I just learned Saturday." I demonstrated. His eyes lit up. "Very nice technique", he stated. After class he wanted me to show it to him again. It was a nice and basic technique. Thanks Master West. Off for a jog. My new goal is to lose 10 lbs. by July. You know--beach time. (was part of the team that)... protected President Park Chung." (pg 139) "Taekwondo has received considerable state backing in Korea. there has been speculation that with his mix of considerable intellect and martial skills Kim was and may still be, a senior figure in the Korean CIA. At an IOC meeting in Atlanta in 1991 the organizers were surprised when Kim went off to spend a day at the US Army's fort Benning 'to be with his buddies'" (pg 139) "... former CIA intelligence officer Philip Liechty... told us... that the man who protects the president... has to have demonstrated that he is willing to kill without hesitation... to do anything the president asked him to do." (pg 139) "... Liechty also opened our eyes to the role of the 'sport' of taekwondo. 'I am aware of a lot of allegations, many of which I consider very reliable, that during President Park's era, the Korean CIA used taekwondo schools as bases for operations... particularly here in the US.' ... 'I have never come across Kim but my assumptions are he must have been very much involved in Korean intelligence activities'... 'I'd say there has been little doubt as to his past involvement in Korean overseas intelligence activity. Thats the mildest way my opinion as to his possible background in intelligence'." (pg 140) And, quoting Dr. Kim, 'We Koreans are a very proud people. We are very nationalistic and we don't take kindly to being told what to do. We just say "go to hell" .' (pg 160) These aren't my words. Just passing them along as someone asked what anyone thought. I would be most interested if anybody has any published references which refute, or support, these allegations. I will do my best to dig up this info for you. This info is somewhere in my many boxes of stuff. However, with respect to Gen. Choi and the creation of Oh Do Kwan (My Way Gym) and eventually Taekwondo, Chung Do Kwan provided the platform for him to do what he has done. Since I inherited the art of ChoSon Kwon Bup (aka ChoSonDo), I have added, modified, and changed things to give it my own personal touch. Let's say I decided to change the name to Shim Sin Do or something like that, does that really change anything? To me, what's important is acknowldeging one's roots. I had the honor of meeting him at a small seminar he held for one of his students. It was a closed seminar, at the time, per a request by one of his Black Belts, then 3rd Dan Mike Hadsell. Mike and I had become close friends and I and my students were invited to attend the closed session. We spent the day (6 to 8 hours...don't quite remember) working on Hapkido, Ho Sin Sul, and Shim Soo Do techniques...That evening, GM Benko, Mr. Hadsell, a fellow Black Belt that I trained and tested with in Cedar Rapids, Iowa under GM Jung, and I had supper. It was that evening that then, 7th Dan Master Benko received word of his promotion to 8th Dan, at which time was considered Grand Master. Anyway, GM Benko, puts on a very informative and technically accurate, participatory training session and seminar...My body was aching the following day from all the joint locks and throws, but it was MORE than worth every ache... If you have the opportunity to train with him, attend a seminar, or take one of his video training courses, I highly recommend it...you will find very few of equal or better expertise...IMVHO of course!
