I recognise that there are things which are somewhat missing in my curriculum. For example, I like all styles of Hapkido but being mainly TKD based, I really prefer simple elements like these found in Combat HKD. However, there are some of my students that tend to more classical elements and they are free to attend classes run by my friend and also some Aikido people on Sundays. Some of them ask me questions about things I don`t teach or know and I simply say "hey folks, I do it differently, but if you are interested, why don`t you attend the HKD class on Sunday". During our recent training camp, I even organised some wrestling classes since there was a wrestling camp in the same sports center: wrestling isn`t definitely what I prefer, but again, some of our people had a lot of fun doing it, and they still enjoy attending some wrestling classes on weekends. And what I really like is the open attitude I see in some of my students. They learn whatever they find interesting, but at the same time, they remain loyal. I really respect them for this. My name is Tigran. I am a chairman of the commission of information, public communications and foreign relations of the Armenian Taekwondo Federation. I am also a taekwondo instructor in a taekwondo club "ARMAN". There are more than 200 students in our club. My friend Armen and I have founded Eastern Martial Art - Arevelian Martarvest magazine (http://www.astroatlas.com/martialart.welcome.htm) in 1997 and I am a chief editor of the magazine. This is a single magazine about martial arts in Armenian language. It is very nice that there is an opportunity for taekwondo lovers and practitioners from all over the world to meet and discuss various themes. I have forgotten its name and have searched the internet in vain for details. I attended SENI 99 in the UK on Saturday and was told a company called Century manufactured them. I have looked on web sites with their equipment and can find no reference to one. I would be grateful if any one knowing of such a device would forward details. - -- All the best, Dave Marriott Appreciate what you have and you will always have enough (Lau Tzu). ------------------------------ From: "Dunn, Danny J RASA" Date: Tue, 9 May 2000 08:57:42 -0500 Subject: the_dojang: RE: Mr. Foley's Post, V7 #310 Rick, Yes, the association I belong to uses a similar method to try to refocus students from the goal of black belt to the philosophy of beginning a new cycle and the goal of mastery and a way of life. We use a rank called cho dan bo, or black belt candidate which is a minimum of 6 months and a distinct belt color, and also have a probationary period of six months after cho dan testing before the rank certificate is presented, although the testees are allowed to wear a black belt upon notification of their test results. This has shifted some of the focus of mental preparation and learning to teach from the last couple of gup ranks. But, I can see a real problem with not setting a plan to implement something like this well into the future. I think that springing it 4 weeks before a cho dan test is very problematic from a respect standpoint, and would almost certainly damage the student-teacher relationship. As for what to do, only you can decide the course. Obviously, the students have some respect for you and your opinions. But as you know, whatever your decision, your relationship with either the teachers or the students will be altered. Only you can judge the importance of the relationships with your instructor's old school. Personally, if I decided to accept these people as students, I would enforce a waiting period of some months before I tested them. Just so that they understand that changing instructors is not a simple solution.
