Most brands deteriorate fast when under general use. Most are comfortable enough for a few hours wear, but 10 hours of tournament judging etc., makes the feet hurt. Most of the shoes dont have a great amount of support, but the soft edges are great for kicking and grappling. I have had at least one pair of them on active duty for the last 10 years or so. Masterline, Pinetree, Century, Macho, Adidas, Discipline....Ive had them all, and worn them all out. Personally, I favour the macho and discipline brands...they seem to hold up well to my use. I am a white belt Hapkido student in Melbourne, Australia at the school of Master Kimm Yong Sup (9th Dan). I have been attending classes for around 3-4 months. I am being posted to Los Angeles for work for 3 months from June 1. Obviously, I want to build up my Hapkido and continue classes, but I imagine some schools wouldn't want a fly-by-nighter like that. I'd also like to do a style that's vaguely compatible with the one I am doing currently (and will return to) - I have been told by the instructors that it is influenced by Hankido and is more "circular/soft" than a lot of Hapkido styles. It is an IHF school. So, the question is whether someone could recommend some schools to visit when I get there that might be appropriate. One problem is that I will be based in *either* Pasadena or Santa Monica - not sure which yet! I will have access to a car, but as I will be sharing it, I'd be looking for a school within I suppose a 20-30 minutes drive max of either of these places. I have found a list of Hapkido schools in California - http://www.binary.net/thomcat/Dojdir.html#california - which was very helpful, but I thought I'd post here to see if anyone had any other suggestions. This is a great mailing list - it's rare to get one with mostly intelligent comments and it's interesting to follow the discussions. If it's preferred to keep these kinds of responses out of the digest itself, I can be reached at diplosteve@excite.com Thanks for any help in advance, Steven Bagshaw ------------------------------ From: CBAUGHN@aol.com Date: Tue, 9 May 2000 23:16:38 EDT Subject: the_dojang: Re: Martial Arts Shoes In a message dated 5/9/00 7:07:07 PM Eastern Daylight Time, the_dojang-owner@hpwsrt.cup.hp.com writes: << How well do martial arts shoes wear for casual walking and around the office? IMHO, martial arts shoes are the MOST comfortable in the world, bar none. Sally cbaughn@aol.com ------------------------------ From: "Moja Kwan - C. But as you know, whatever your decision, your relationship with either the teachers or the students will be altered. Only you can judge the importance of the relationships with your instructor's old school. Personally, if I decided to accept these people as students, I would enforce a waiting period of some months before I tested them. Just so that they understand that changing instructors is not a simple solution. Danny............... I have been in lurk mode on this issue to see how it played out. I would concur with Mr. Dunn's comments in that we should not encourage our students to run from conflict resolution (Mu do), nor take sides with a student in a disagreement between student and instructor. Having given my TSDMDK party line response, I can also add that this is another example of "when East meets West." Here in the U.S.A., get ready for parents of 8 year olds telling you when their child should test. We call them clients here in American business lingo. Not all clients are ready to show unswerving loyalty to any product, much less a martial art or specific instructor. The market is just too saturated for that. If you haven't decided how you will deal with this growing market (dis-satisfied martial arts students) the nearest "sell-a-belt" school will. IMVHO as a studio owner, I would be a catalyst for the candidates and their instructor to have a Student-teacher, service provider-client face to face & heart to heart. Only if that failed to achieve a solution would I consider accepting these students (better to practice martial arts under odd circumstances than not at all). If these students were accepted, I would make it very clear that there would be no way they could test to blackbelt in my school any earlier than they could have in their old school. Century does have a website. If you look under Century Martial Arts gear...u should find it. Century does make a few strike bags without the digital indicator. If you are hitting the bag why would you need a digital device to let you know how hard your moving the person holding the bag ? Sometimes simpler is better.
