They may know nothing about the martial arts and think it is all about violence. Maybe if they see the friendly, helpful, polite atmosphere (if your school is the same as my school), have them watch a class so they could see the recital of the oath, the respect that each student shows each other and their instructor, they would change their minds. Just a suggestion. _______________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? His foster mother had to file an "incident" report and the foster care agency made the foster mom pull both kids out of my Taekwondo classes. [snip] Little kids get into arguments from time to time. Shoot, I do remember when I was in second grade and got a parent-teacher conference called about me because another little girl in my class thought she could bully me around (side note: This girl is now among the population of teenagers that goes out on a regular basis doing all sort of illegal things at the tender age of 17~18). In my elementary school days, I did get into several playground fights, but I'm not a thug(ette?) running around and taking it out on people. I got into a lot of trouble because I didn't pay attention in class as a result of being a bit on the hyper and distracted side. I had the recent pleasure of seeing one of my former elementary school teachers last week, and she was amazed at how much I had changed since the third grade, physically but most of all mentally. She confided in me that she thinks (still does) I have ADHD, but what good will it do to take Ritalin now? Moving on... Now, I could understand if the little boy "Johnny" got into fights on a regular basis. I applaud you for dealing with his behavior and meting out whatever consequence necessary for the case and the violation of the student oath. I understand the foster mother having to file an incident report, but did the foster agency have to force the mother to pull the kids out of a positive program? A single incident which was severe enough to invoke the filing of an incident report is something to monitor but not pull all the plugs out on. I do believe they went a little too far in a common everyday situation. As for literature, there's this great article that was written in the Taekwondo Times (I think; can't find the article!!!!) about Taekwondo and children whose grades improve as a result of being in some sort of martial art program. The article also mentioned how Taekwondo helped children with ADHD focus better in class...while I don't even remember the name of the article nor the year it was written (probably 1995~1998), I can tell you the cover had a picture of a kid, half of the kid in his dobok, the other half in his school clothes carrying a book or two. I wish I could find that article. If I find it before you present your case to the agency, I'll be sure to forward the bibliographical information. Hope this helps some. ===== ~~Kim Jones (*ladytimberland@yahoo.com*) http://kenochi_timberland.tripod.com/ ICQ: 52828008 AOL: Lady Timberland "The path of excess leads to the tower of wisdom." Can ya give us some details about what happened? No, not really. I was just there for the day. Lots of matches going on in six rings. The competition area was in a smallish gym, so lots of spectators and fighters in a smaller area. I spent most of the time chatting with folks, but I did get to watch a few matches. IMHO, electronic scoring makes TKD a much more interesting spectator sport.
