(BTW - does anyone have that issue? If so, please write me) However, I learned today that this Fall Turtle Press will release an English version of this Korean martial art classic. It is a translation by Sang H. Kim. I for one look forward to obtaining an English version for my library, as I figure some others on this list might too. You can get more details and pre-order at: www.turtlepress.com P.S. I was always fascinated with the Ox pictures on the temple walls in Korea and like the story that goes with them. Anyone here read "Herding the Ox?" It looks like one I will like and may have to get soon too. I'd like to hear opinions from anyone who has read it. Thanks. I know in my own school our competition is not other martial arts schools but rather other sports. So many kids are involved in other activities in the US its hard to get them serious in martial arts. By getting them more involved at a younger age, maybe we can keep them going. >> Yes, we are having the same problem. Baseball, Soccer, Football, Hockey, Basketball, Gymnastics take up all their time now. Karate is sort of shoved to the side. We are what they do when they have the extra time to spare. I have heard that some schools are now putting in Karate Aerobics for kids who are overweight. I know we have a big problem in the states with "large" children ... which in turn is turning out more and more early cases of diabetes in children (too much junk food and sweets) ... Do any of you stress the need for exercise in your ads because of these problems in the children now? But are they using different criteria than their own instructors? A higher one? Are there teaching methods more superior that the student could learn faster 50 years ago? Learning environment so inadequate that our understanding decreases with time? For many active training students, do they not wait longer than most prescibed periods for Dan testing? Just wondering what other readers feel. >> If you start earlier ... you would be a higher rank at a younger age, I would think. No? I think many hold on to their students and not give them a black belt because they know they will be out the door and on to something else as soon as they got the belt. And others are just strict about what kind of quality students they want representing their school. But a lot of the time I think it is the student who holds themselves back. They come to only 2 classes a week ... every week .... for years. They wonder why it takes them so long. It is not the same thing as coming in 3 - 4 days a week and doing 2 or 3 classes in one day. I have to explain that all the time to my students and their parents in here.
