They are both cute as a button. The little boy has been diagnosed with an oppositional behavior disorder and is not on meds. He has come a long way in classes. The other day, the little boy--I'll call him Johnny--punched another kid at pre-school. His foster mother had to file an "incident" report and the foster care agency made the foster mom pull both kids out of my Taekwondo classes. For his transgression, he suffered consequences from both his foster mother and from me, for not abiding by his student oath ("I shall never misuse Taekwondo"). All my students are warned in advance that they are not to use their skills in an aggressive manner outside classes, though they are allowed to use them to defend themselves. The foster mom believes, as I do, that the martial arts does not foster aggressive or violent behavior, but rather serves to help us "conquer" (a better word escapes me at the moment) that need for violence and aggression.<<< Healthcare providers use the word "vent." Hopefully, this will allow them to see your dojang as a place where the child can shed this behavior and leave it behind him, not a training ground to make such behaviour more effective. Since the agency punished both children for the actions of only one, it does not seem to be interested in justice.... >>>Now we need to go prove it to the Foster Care agency. Do any of you have any research or resources you can recommend that would help us present this case to the agency? I appreciate any help you can give me! I was just there for the day. Lots of matches going on in six rings. The competition area was in a smallish gym, so lots of spectators and fighters in a smaller area. I spent most of the time chatting with folks, but I did get to watch a few matches. IMHO, electronic scoring makes TKD a much more interesting spectator sport. Ray Terry raymail@hpwsrt.cup.hp.com >> i agree about the electronic scoring. i wish they wouldve announced who was fighting whom. at first i thought maybe they werent doing that because they didnt want to distract with overhead noises. but then there was the announcement about merchandise for sale in the lobby....lol. i wouldve loved to have known who was fighting. i taped some fights, but have no ideer who they are! :). melinda Chajonshim Martial Arts Supply http://www.chajonshim.com ------------------------------ From: Ray Terry Date: Tue, 16 May 2000 06:57:27 -0700 (PDT) Subject: [none] ------------------------------ End of The_Dojang-Digest V7 #341 ******************************** It's a great day for Taekwondo!
