How about when the students have first hand knowledge that the instructor/owner digresses? Should the student(s) who also help keep the school's books call the IRS when no income is being claimed and students paying tuition are instructed to pay in cash or to make their check out to the teacher personally? Should they also call the state IRS when no sales tax is being turned over for each bottle of water, power bar or snack sold at the front desk? How about OSHA and Fair Employment when none of the "employees" (instructor and assistants) are paid and teach in asbestos conditions. Should we chuckle with him when he brags about all of this while we struggle with last minute filings at tax time? Or should we feel sorry for him when his knee is bothering him and we are paying for his public assisted health insurance thru the state (because on paper he is low-income)? ------------------------------ From: foxdragon@cuttingedge.net Date: Tue, 23 May 2000 09:21:18 -0700 Subject: the_dojang: Re: The_Dojang-Digest V7 #357 > From: Tim Bruening > Date: Sat, 20 May 2000 18:34:50 -0700 > Subject: the_dojang: Korean Assassins And Purple Belt Form > > I am beginning to learn Joong-Gun, the Purple Belt Form in ITC Taekwondo. > Joong-Gun is named after the patriot An Joog-Gun, who assassinated > Hiro-Bumi Ito, the first Japanese Governor of Korea, known as the man who > played the leading part of the Korea-Japan merger. Now, I told u guys before. Cut it out. You are making me feel uncomfortable. I do not feel I've changed a lot. More informed maybe and this list and others has a lot to do with that. So if I have grown in thought and mind it is my friends on these lists who have made this possible. So. Thank you all. I have got a lot yet to learn. Friends like you all keeps the passion for the martial arts and the desire to learn more inside me. Besides, you've gotta keep me humble. I do not want to develop a egocomplex. :) Donna Galster 2nd gup kyukido (Since Sally is asking) AKF Martial Arts Black River Falls, WI http://www.cuttingedge.net/~pdgalst/donna.html - -- Me and my shadow ------------------------------ From: CA&B Skjold Date: Tue, 23 May 2000 12:10:34 -0500 Subject: the_dojang: MA Stripper stripping is merely another form of pornography. Like pornography it is an insult to a woman's dignity. She is looked upon as an object not as a person. This causes her to question her own self worth. Tell her that she shouldn't have to lower herself to the level of an object. If she would like to quit stripping but can't afford to offer her lessons for free and perhaps a position as the school's secretary. If you have any friends who are in business tell her you'd be happy to be a reference for her. Any work that doesn't insult someone's dignity is better than a job that reduces someone to a commodity How do you all know this woman has low self esteem or lack of self worth? Maybe she choose this profession because she is very proud of her body and is confident enough to be able to share it through her performances as a stripper. She maybe taking martial arts as a way to condition and tone and improve flow of movement. Well that my opinion anyhow. All of those questions came out of my head instead of reality. I have no doubt our master would kick people out for knowing they sell drugs (I think he would beat the crap out of me if he even knew I used to smoke cigarettes...). When I first posted, I was under the opinion that people should generally keep their noses out of other people's business. I still lean towards that feeling, but this discussion has brought out some new thoughts that have softened my opinion (or at least opened it to new ideas), which is basically the whole point of this list, so that's cool. I still think it's a very dangerous thing to appoint yourself as judge over people, but in cases of legality, and actions that go against the moral codes that you're supposed to be subscribing to as part of learning your art, I agree that there's some responsibility to enforce standards of behavior. I get annoyed when people fail to follow the etiquette expected towards our master, and that situation and this discussion have some common elements, in that they both deal with standards of behavior that we expect out of our fellow students. Anyway, I also got to the chapter on 'The Way of Honor' in Forrest Morgan's _Living the Martial Way_ last night, and it had a good discussion and interesting framework for reasoning about 'moral' or 'honor' issues as a martial artist. For the most part I can agree with or understand how he approaches those issues, although I wouldn't want to subscribe to a philosohpy I read for the first time last night. It was definitely useful as another opinion on how to view issues of behavior and conduct, though. ------------------------------ From: Tkdtiger@aol.com Date: Tue, 23 May 2000 14:44:11 EDT Subject: the_dojang: Olympic Event In a message dated 5/23/00 10:51:21 AM Central Daylight Time, the_dojang-owner@hpwsrt.cup.hp.com writes: << BTW, I was told that spectators painted their faces and bodies and used noisemakers to support their favorites at Team Trials. In fact, i am sure that it was actually detrimental to the players as the referees could not "hear" solid points. Which might partially explain the fact that all matches were low scoring - and a lot of points missed, on the other hadn - the cameras loved it - it showed a lot of spirit - but if the kid behind me with the whistle hadn't moved - it would have "accidentally" been stepped on or some other dire accident. ------------------------------ From: Piotr Bernat Date: Tue, 23 May 2000 21:47:08 +0200 Subject: the_dojang: Re: Spectators Hi Sally, > BTW, I was told that spectators painted their faces and bodies and used > noisemakers to support their favorites at Team Trials. > The comment I heard was, "it was like a football or baseball game." > Opinions from anyone who was there? There are others who take a more "hands-off" approach. The great thing about America is that both of us have the freedom to run our schools as we wish. If a student under our instruction feels that our ethical teaching is inappropriate, and it is clear that he/she is firm in that belief, the we refer them to a school more in keeping with their desires. For us, the teaching of fighting skills without instruction in ethical and moral behavior does not produce warriors, but barbarians. If a student does not agree, then they can train elsewhere. ------------------------------ From: TaoArt@aol.com Date: Wed, 24 May 2000 14:58:43 EDT Subject: the_dojang: New Black Belts It's my pleasure to inform everyone that Mr. Ernie Finestone and Mr. Jonathan Stering of the American Martial Way Association passed their Black Belt testing last weekend.
