Kerry WTF TKD ------------------------------ From: Ann-Marie White Date: Wed, 24 May 2000 21:27:12 -0400 Subject: the_dojang: Front stances and physics Hi everyone: I want to thank you all for your suggestions and comments with my last question about training at my school crosstraining elsewhere. I think things are going to work out. I now have another question. I've been having a discussion with one of my instructors about the front stance. What is the purpose of the front stance? What lessons are one supposed to take from the front stance and apply to the rest of TKD? In my school, we punch, block and move from the front stance, but we don't really kick from it. Yet, it seems to be one of the foundations upon which this "kicking art" is built. I want to argue that we get more than balance from the front stance, but I'm not sure how to articulate the rest. What are your opinions on this? Do you spar from a front stance? Do you have more than one front stance that you use (medium deep and very deep)? Likewise, what is the purpose of the backstance? Also, I'd heard that there was a physics and martial arts list. Does anyone have any information about it? Thanks much! Like pornography > it is an insult to a woman's dignity. S I am neither "for" nor "against" "exotic entertainment." I believe it is a personal decision to work in, or be a patron of, this form of "entertainment. However it occurs to me, contrary another person's commentary, that it may very well be the men whose pockets are being vacuumed by the dancers that are more the "victim" than the woman who is on stage. The important thing to bear in mind is that both are there of their own free will. This means, that if in fact anyone is being "exploited" it is being done at their very own accord, or by their own permission - so to speak. Also, who am I to tell a person what they should do to feed their kids or pay for tuition? Should a woman who makes $250 a night be forced switch to working at Burger-World, or some other near-minimal wage job? Would that send her 'self-esteem' soaring to heights heretofore unknown? Lastly, why is it that someone who was born with a fine brain is not condemned for using it for their financial advancement? Same for a person gifted musically. Should they not sing or play piano for a paying audience? (Conversely, is the audience exploiting them by listening to their music?) Yet when someone is gifted with a beautiful physique and makes the personal decision to use it as a means of support, they are condemned as being immoral. ...Or it assumed that they are morons who are being exploited (while they may be laughing all the way to the bank). Doesn't this double standard that has descended from our Puritanical ancestors bother anyone else but me? Funny thing is that these ancestors fled their homelands and suffered vast difficulty to come to this land so that they could be free from being told how to live their lives. Now it appears that their sprit is invoked to restrain or oppress those who dare believe or choose to live differently than they do. Enjoy your freedom...so long as you live your lives according to MY belief system, eh? Again, I care little about the world of the 'strip-joint' - must be my advancing age - - but I do believe that if you don't like 'em, don't patronize 'em. And if you want to spend your money away on lap dances, that's your own business -- just like it's your own business if you want to be a lap-dancer. Rare social commentary from... Thanks for the great responses on stretch machines. I am inclined to go with the theory that a daily or every other day regimen with basic stretch exercises is the best way to go. I have reviewed a video by a guy named Marco Lala on stretching exercises. He does not use stretch machines. He employs bricks, playground fences, and other exercises to incorporate into your stretching regimen. If anyone is familiar with the Ringside Stretch Machine, please give me a shout. This is an illegal practice and reporting the violation would be justified. You will have to look to your own conscious to decide how to handle it. > How about OSHA and Fair Employment when none of the "employees" > (instructor and assistants) are paid and teach in asbestos conditions. Many instructors and assistants teach for free. Perhaps to fulfill the obligations of their rank, out of respect for their instructor, or any number of other reasons. If you don't want to do it, don't, plain and simple. If it is a requirement for rank advancement accept that requirement and fulfill it or 1) be happy at the rank you have or 2) go elsewhere. Lets face it, in this day and age in America, if you are doing something like this it is by your choice. You can always walk out the door. Complaining will never solve this problem, only action will! As for the asbestos issue, first talk to the owner, he/she is in the best position to solve the problem quickly if they are so inclined. If that does not prompt immediate action, and health and human safety are truly at risk, by all means, remove youself from the situation and contact appropriate authorities to prevent possible risks to the health of others. > Should we chuckle with him when he brags about all of this while we struggle > with last minute filings at tax time? If what you say is true, of course not. > Or should we feel sorry for him when > his knee is bothering him and we are paying for his public assisted health > insurance thru the state (because on paper he is low-income)? Perhaps sorry his knee hurts (I don't believe in wishing suffering on anyone), but outraged that his cheating is costing the taxpayers money. It all boils down to this: What in the world are you doing there anyway? If all this is truely going on and you are morally outraged, you should leave. No offense, but whining does nothing to help. If you stay in an immoral or unethical situation of your own volition you abandon the same morals that lead to your outrage. The choice is and always has been yours. Moral and ethical responsibility always starts first with you (aka. lead by example).
