The sole purpose and function of the weekend was to test the two candidates. Many people are involved in the process (not just martial artists). The testing takes a huge expenditure of time and effort from the testees as well as the testors. But it is well worth it. The testing is seen almost as a gift to the candidates. Despite the rigors and demands, it is an experience that, as one of our new black belts said "...doesn't make many new revelations... but really clarifies a lot of things in your life." But each is different... we leave the interpretation up to those who experience it. Hope all is well with you Illona... will I be seeing you at ST2000? Can freeweights have the same result ? >> Ken, I have not used the Bowflex, but as a personal trainer, I can tell you that you can get the same results with freeweights, probably better. With any resistance exercise, it is what you put into it that counts. Look at Steve Reeves (someone I strongly admired) and the body he built with free weights, no drugs, etc. You can work every part of the body with dumbbells and barbells, and as an added benefit they work by helping the stabilizer muscles and to be able to balance them, etc. That's something machines don't have at times. However, if spending the money and the convenience of the Bowflex keeps you using it, it will do a lot more that dusty dumbbells in the corner that are never used. How you make your muscles work is often not as important as making them work. About one year ago, I was doing a flying side kick over an obstacle and landed wrong on my Left leg. Torn ACL and Medial Collateral ligament. (not to mention the worse tear in my already torn Medial Meniscus. I underwent ACL reconstruction with semi-tendonosis graft last August. It was three months before I could return to the Dojang to begin VERY light training, and, with guidance from my orthopoedic surgeon, I have been increasing the tintensity and techniques involved in my workout. I am still a long way from feeling normal (for one thing, the muscles in the leg atrophy at an alarming rate, and the hamstring tendon being missing (as the graft) doesn't help). I am working hard weight training and working out in the dojang to regain my strength and agility...I can currently do certian jump spin kicks well (tho not as well as before) but I'm still leary of landing on the leg. My orthopoedic surgeon says I can expect to continue to improve, but that things won't really feel normal until 2 years post op. Before you get discouraged, I am back to normal workouts, sparring, and all of the forms and One steps that we work on, and have actually tested and passed 2 belt gradings since my accident. The thing to keep in mind is to perservere, and that things will get better slowly....I checked my progress every 3 months, rather than every day. Please email me if you'd like to talk more about this, and I can provide you with all of the specifics you would like. I am VERY glad that I had the surgery....even tho I need to wear my Townsend brace for 2 years, I would never have been able to return without fixing my ACL. I hope things go as well for you...please do email with any questions you may have, or to vent your frustrations at having had this happen....I KNOW the feeling. Not that I have anything to complain about, it is what brought me to m.a. But to answer your question, I prefer free weights. I do not like these "1 machine, 500 exercise" type units. I do not feel that they are condicive to good form on all exercises. In addition, although I have not worked out extensively (or recently) on bowflex, I seem to recall that movements were not smooth. When you performed the exercise, there was a jerkiness to it. To be honest, I could be confusing bowflex with another product. In a nutshell, I would not buy it. Hope this helps. Neal I have reviewed the commercials and video tape sent to me on Bowflex. Is Boxflex a good training device. So, is choice of forms a good thing or a bad thing?" Being active with AAU as well as USTU, an observation: while it is difficult to compare different forms, at least the AAU gives judges a basis for comparison in their rule book. Rather than looking for correctness, they basically assume a competitor knows their form, and instead judges beauty, grace, rhythm, focus, power and technique. Second observation - we do PalGwes, and a lot of USTU-oriented folks don't even know both of the accepted form systems. So, there is always some ambiguity/subjectivity involved. I think most judges just try to do the right thing and compare the merits of the competitors in front of them after setting a standard from the first performance. Just my 2 cents... Did you have any > collateral damage beside the ACL? I blew mine doing a front kick (with drag) and attempting to jump to a round kick(his hands dropped), I hyperextend my leg, completely tore the ACL, small tear on my meniscus and knocked some tissue of my femur. Started some light PT before surgery, had a full recon, meniscus cleanup and femur debridment at 28 days post injury. I was doing PT 2 times a day, and making business trips at 2 weeks. Started walking through forms at about three months, started some light (no jumps mostly hands) sparring at 5 months, took about nine months to get back up to speed. I did have some problems getting my inner quad firing properly and still need to keep the PT up, or the leg will still start to atrophy. I'm 1 year three months post, the knee is strong, feels almost normal, my right leg is still about 2 inches smaller than my left, but most of the strength is back. The good news is my recon knee is quieter on the stairs than my "normal" knee. All in all I completely lost about 8 months of progression and completed in my first tournament a month ago, took third in sparring. I still have some mental hesitancy, and tend to stay away from the cool jump kicks. You don't need those anyway. Good Luck and do your PT, check out Bob's Knee Board for all kinds of great information and experiences on ACL reconstruction's, DREW ------------------------------ From: "Marko or Mitar" Date: Tue, 30 May 2000 20:51:48 +0100 Subject: the_dojang: Soccer This is completly off martial arts topic, so I'm sorry. I just want to thank all the people from the Republic of Korea on the list for the hospitality that their compatriots showed to the Yugoslavian national soccer team members. In the situation where very few countries want to play versus Yugoslavia at all, we appreciate your hospitality and will to play two games with our team. Thank you all very much. By the way, now I know why is your national soccer team called "The Asian Brazil". Your guys play very good, very fast, with lot of running, very energetic and modern, although they are mostly very young. I'm sure they'll have a great future.
