For $14.95, the price is right, and it could be the best 15 bucks you've ever spent ! > >> Naturally I have Marc's videos as well, and I too think they give some very good information. Due to some trouble Paladin had with LOTI, the group that used to do videos for Paladin, the video was reduced to $14.95. However, after all the dust cleared, the video price went back up to $19.95. Paladin now shoots all of their videos themselves. Both this video and its companion "Winning A Street Knife Fight" are available through Paladin Press. West" Date: Tue, 30 May 2000 19:33:37 -0500 Subject: the_dojang: Knife defense After reading Ken's review of a knife defense video, I thought I would share one point. I watched one video on knife defense where the instructor took his knife and cut a hanging piece of meat ( I don't know if it was the same one or not) to show the effect of a cut, and all in all it was an interesting time. The only problem I saw in THIS particular video, was the basic motion taught was imagining a pole extending vertically from the ground up through the body and passing out through the top of the head around which your body should pivot when dodging the blade. If the attacker were to stab at the "pole", then your movement would not take you out of harms way. This imaginary pole should, in fact, be 15 inches in front of your solar plexus so that your pivoting motion should be in an arc with a radius of 15 inches. This motion will take you out of the path of the incoming blade.....Try it.....J. R. I do not know if there are any schools, other than wu shu schools here in Korea that train this way apart from Hapkido schools. I wouldn't be surprised either way. This is not much of a lead, I know but... He joins I believe three or four other Americans to represent the US at the Olympics in Sydney. Juan came out of a seven year retirement to do this! Many said he was too old. As you know, he was a silver medalist in Seoul and then in Barcelona and he did not fight in Atlanta as there was no Taekwondo there. I once saw a film of Juan in competition knock out his opponent with a punch to the chest protector, which is rare in Taekwondo. I've had the privilege of meeting Juan on a number of occasions. He is not only the most talented martial artist and athlete Ive met, he is one of the warmest, smartest and remarkable persons I've known. I teach a lot of medical students and they are not often as articulate and skilled at communicating as he is. I asked him if I could post this. I'm usually not that involved as a spectator in the Olympics, but its nice to have someone in particular to really support and cheer in a meaningful way. I wanted to share that publicly.
