I am now heading into the last big step towards my first Black Belt (ITF TKD) as we have our "Power Weekend" beginning on Friday night. We have to pack enough supplies to keep us going for the day and would like to know what you would pack or wish you would have packed for your testing. Friday night is not too long (estimate 5:30 PM to 8:30 PM) but Saturday we are going all day from 8:30 AM to 7:30 PM. My plan is to pack about 6 Litres of water, some sports drinks, Ice, Apples, Bananas and maybe some Vegetarian Sushi fo lunch so I don't have to worry about the fish spoiling. Would the sports nutrition bars be of use? If so do you have any suggestions as there are so many types on the market (Creatine loaded, Protein, Carbs etc..) I want to make sure that I'm fueled to succeed (endure!). Your thoughts and suggestions would be appreciated. John P. Hi all, I am writing to gain your opinions in hopes that it aid me in a decision I must make. Here is the deal... Most of you who have known me for a while, and even those who haven't, know when I find something I like it gets in my blood, so here is the problem I am trying to solve... I have been playing softball for some 15 years and love it with a passion thing is I have found that I have the same passion for Tae Kwon Do. So the problem is, on some Tuesday's this summer the 2 are scheduled for the same time. I have been trying to decide now for about 2 months which I am going to go to on the nights that they have the same time slot. I need to make this decision by next tuesday the 6th but as of yet am still of two minds about it. The conclusion I have up to this time is that I figure I have a couple years of good softball in me yet and it's only for a few months in the summer and Tae Kwon Do is for life and all year round. But being equally dedicate to the both of them I have become torn in trying to decide, that is why I ask for some opinions on the subject. Some of you know me from one or the other, some of you from both and all of you are people of whom I value your opinion so... Thank You all Anne ------------------------------ From: MissIllona@aol.com Date: Thu, 1 Jun 2000 11:45:01 EDT Subject: the_dojang: Re: Self Defense In a message dated 6/1/00 6:09:14 AM Pacific Daylight Time, the_dojang-owner@hpwsrt.cup.hp.com writes: << Psyched to maybe see you at AWSDA. Hope you can make it. >> Went to the site and saw the price for it ... will have to see if it is in my budget this summer. I really want to be there ... but the price of the seminar + transportation costs + hotel accomandations + car rental + food quickly adds up. I have all of June and July to save for it (plus I am having an In-House Tournament for my kids here this summer ... I promised them if they came all summer and not flaked off I would give them this as a reward) ... so we shall see ! Do you have any inkling of any other self defense seminars that might be coming up this year ? I will have to see about setting up some kind of fund in my budget to help myself get to more of these kinds of seminars. I would really like to learn more self defense stuff ... rather than more kicking and punching stuff. Thanks for all the info, Meghan ! And I loved reading about what you do on your site of Guard Up ! Interesting concept ! We are investigating how to resist being pushed into a car by a much larger and stronger person (new class scenario) ... when you are being jerked around and punched and slapped and screamed at and pushed at (caged headgear is what the victim is wearing) ... it is hard to get out of it ... but we have come up with a few ideas. It was suggested to us by one of our students who had it happen to her by an enraged boyfriend and she was helpless she said and didn't know what to do. Anyone have any other scenarios that are different that they are working on ? Ms Younger may be only 70kg, but she is a self-defence teacher with a fourth degree black belt in tae kwon do and, as the thugs quickly found out, she practises what she teaches. Their lesson began moments after they leaped out of a dark bus shelter on Glenfield Rd last Friday evening. "I felt some hands on my shoulder. Out of instinct I turned around and kicked him really hard in the groin," she said. "He was on his knees and I smashed his jaw with my elbow. As he lay on the ground I stomped on him." Her counter-attack was stopped when the man's accomplice hit Ms Younger from behind. "I was knocked unconscious. By the time I came around I saw the other guy dragging his mate up a nearby side street." Her first instinct was to chase after them. "I wanted to get up and go after them. I actually had to stop myself and say 'don't be a hero'." "Every day I teach people to never use martial arts in anger. I had to remind myself of that." But that was not the last she would see of them. She returned home on Sunday lunchtime to find the second attacker ransacking her home. "I walked in on him and we were face to face. I recognised him straightaway - he went white as a sheet." As soon as he moved, Ms Younger kicked him in the face, stopping him dead in his tracks. She followed up with further blows, including a kick to the leg that was so hard she heard his knee crack. Having let him escape just nights before, Ms Younger wanted to continue attacking him. "I've never felt so angry. I didn't know what I'd do to him if I went after him. I just said to him: 'Get out, get off my property'." The offenders are still at large and police inquiries are continuing. The first attacker is described as a Maori, 1.83m tall with short-cropped hair. The second is a well- built, 1.83m European. He had blond hair that was cut short on top and left long at the back. "I'm shaken but not shocked by the attack," said Ms Younger. "I was more shocked at the level of my anger that built up inside me." Ms Younger urged other women to learn basic self-defence skills to deal with similar situations. "If you value yourself then learn to take care of yourself." - ----------------------------------------------------------------------- Donnla Nic Gearailt Computer Laboratory, New Museums Site, Graduate Student Pembroke St., Cambridge CB2 3QG, U.K. tel: +44-1223-334619 http://www.cl.cam.ac.uk/~dbn20/ "An eyelash!
