IMHO, that is not actually the case. This article is about Gen. Choi, the story of Taekwondo is far more than just the Gen. Choi story. Now if you limit your discussion only to the Oh Do Kwan and the ITF, then maybe. Check the cites provided over the past couple of weeks for unbiased and well researched articles into the development of TKD and Korean martial arts. It is correct that the number of patterns increased steadily, but I think that at some point in time, 20 was considered the final number of patterns. I believe that 20 was the going number way into the 70s when 4 more where added. More details, anyone? I know many will disagree with me, and that's fine. I would appreciate "helpful" comments, suggestions, and especially sources regardless of whether they support or refute the arguments." Carl, Please don't take this as either a personal attack on you or on General Choi. I believe that General Choi has a great legacy in the Korean martial arts. Personally I favor ITF style over WTF style. And I currently practice Tang Soo Do, and am somewhat on the outside of this whole issue, or at least an impartial observer. I don't harbor the scathing opinions that some may of General Choi's ties with North Korea and Kim, Jung- Il. After all General Choi's family roots are in North Korea. This is not to say that I agree with him or would have done the same thing. But, history may well remember him as a man ahead of his time. After all I haven't heard any similar scathing remarks about the current South Korean visit to North Korea, and I certainly haven't heard them pointing out all the flaws of communism or Kim, Jung-Il in videos of their meetings. I know from experience that political situations must be handled in a manner that allows the looser to save face, or agreements are almost never reached without combat. After all, a byline quote I see often is the statement by General Choi, The reason our people suffer is because our fathers failed to rule wisely." However, I believe that it is a mistake to attribute the founding of a martial art to someone just because he espoused a name that the majority of kwan leaders and politicians found acceptable. The kwan leaders certainly did not go back to their dojangs and begin teaching different techniques because they agreed to use the new name. Further, all the evidence indicates that General Choi probably did not have the depth of experience at the time to found a new style. After all, he was affiliated with the Chung Do Kwan himself. The naming was a political move, not the founding of a style. Is it significant? Yes!! To all the Kwans and to ITF. Did it found any style? No. That would be like saying that Funakoshi founded Karate-do because he changed the name from "Chinese hand" to "Empty hand", again for political acceptability. There have been a number great posts on the digest from very knowledgeable masters pertinent to your subject. There are also several books written by kwan heads and high ranking masters with good information, though some of them are very selectionist and somewhat revisionist and facts must be cross-checked for accuracy. Good luck with your project.
