Ray Terry raymail@hpwsrt.cup.hp.com ------------------------------ From: Will Lowe Date: Wed, 21 Jun 2000 15:53:03 -0400 (EDT) Subject: the_dojang: korean arts in Berkeley I wrote in about this in April, but now I'm on-site and actually having some difficulty ... I've recently relocated from Delaware to Berkeley, CA. In Delaware my girlfriend and I were studying Tang Soo Do (World Tang Soo Do Assoc. style) and Sin Moo Hap Ki Do at one of Master John Godwin's schools. We found the (sortof) combined WTSDA/HapKiDo curriculum to be a good balance of forms, technique, mental preparation, and a good solid workout as well. We started TSD at that school about a year ago, and started officially studing HapKiDo also in January. Unfortunately, we're not sure how to find a similar in the Berkeley area. The nearest WTSDA school is an hour from here (Kate's going to be a graduate student, and so that commute is out, and the instructor there couldn't recommend anyone closer), and we've visited the UC Berkeley TKD group -- the person we talked to there indicated that their program was mostly about sparring and tournement competitions -- this isn't what we were looking for. Kate especially likes forms, we'd both like a place that emphasized technique over sparring, and I'd prefer something that gave the option of doing some weapons training as well. I _like_ sparring -- as a practical application of technique, a good workout, and just as adrenaline-rush fun, but not to the exclusion of all else. We're also both interested in the meditation and other mental aspects of the martial arts. Most of the other schools around are arts we're not at all familiar with: mostly various styles of Kung Fu, some Judo, and a Kuk Sool Won school, Wushu, Aikido, and a few others (some just saying they're "karate" schools). Can anyone offer recommendations on: 1) These styles? Which ones are likely to be something like what we're looking for? 2) Picking good instructors -- there are something like 30 Kung Fu schools in the East Bay, and all with different subtitles. How do you select one that's good? I know nothing about the lineage of Kung Fu, e.g., so I have no idea how to tell if someone who's claiming to be a Master really is ...
