Last year she had two intraocular implants (lenses) put in her eyes, because she had severe cataracts. The doctor said that after a year, the lenses would be anchored as well as her body's original ones. He said that a hit to the head should not dislodge the artificial lenses any more than it would the original ones but that he wouldn't guarantee it. As I'm sure you are all aware, ITF is nominally no contact, but in practice we have all been smacked around to varying degrees. My wife wants to spar, mainly for the conditioning and timing, but she has not sparred since the operation because she is afraid of permanently damaging her eyes. She would spar if she could find good protection for her eyes. Given the talent pool on this mailing list, does anyone know 1) what is commercially available for eye and head protection, 2) where to look for such equipment and 3) personal preferences or recommendations. I think there is also a Hapkido pgm at Berkeley. Have you found them yet? There is a TSD school down in Fremont, but that is perhaps too far away for you. Not much TSD/SBD here in the Bay Area. Have you checked out the Kuk Sool school? You might like that... Find out who their instructor was/is and if they ever have Kwan Jang In Sun Seo, come to their dojang and conduct any type of training. Kuk Sool Won is a Korean Martial Art that offers many of the things that you mentioned you were interested in. Your former Sa Bum John Goodwin, was a student of Kuk Sool Won for a long time you may want to discuss things with him prior to making your decision. Good luck and train hard regardless of what you choose. Aside from the obvious "don't get anywhere near a mob like that," what are some opinions on how a lady should best handle that type of situation, in terms of self-defense. I've discussed this with my daughter, and basically told her "if your shirt is ripped off or whatever, don't worry about that, but you must keep your wits about you." Moreover, if anyone goes for fondling or whatever, I'm inclined to tell her to firmly utilize the appropriate techniques (grab and bend a finger or two, finger the jugular notch, finger in the eye, foot to the groin, etc.). Upon reflection, I'm wondering if this would actually escalate the situation to be even more violent. I'm keenly interested in folks ideas and backgrounds/experiences to support those ideas, especially from the GuardUp folks, for example. Thanks a bunch. That was completely unacceptable behavior.
