I have lost 15 pounds with another 5 to go (although purely for vanity). In this, you eat three meals a day (no snacking until later in the diet), two meals, no carbohydrates (only up to 4g) and in the third meal, which most people save for dinner, you can eat anything you want in an hour. Anything. You shouldn't but I do. Once you get to your desired, health weight, you modify the diet to maintain (that's where the snacks are allowed). The weight will stay off because you have changed your eating habits. If you are a vegetarian or a vegan, this is not the diet for you. I'm a meat eater so this is great. I find I am less hungry, and when I do get hungry, I'm normal, I don't turn into a raging psychopath. This ties into the low blood sugar debate, that used to be me but not since. I'm not constantly in the fridge, eating out of boredom, none of my clothes fit and I'm happy. The one thing I really like about this diet is the reward meal. Just knowing that you have that to look forward to gets me through some troubling situations. A low fat, low calorie diet didn't work at all for me but this one did. Even my doctor agrees with it. I've been a hiker/backpacker for a looooooong time and the one thing most of us never leave home without is some variety of GORP (good old raisins and peanuts). The peanuts provide protein and fat and salt (or not if you don't want it), the raisins add the sugar and a bit of iron, etc. Most folks vary it to suit themselves; I usually add dried cherries and apricots and sometimes other nuts, some folks add M&M's or granola. I've heard that the fat and protein taken with the sugar keeps the sugar from hitting your bloodstream too fast and causing the rush/crash effect -- sounds reasonable but I'm not positive of the physiology of that. I do know from experience backpacking though that a good bag of GORP and several quarts of water can keep me going all day. Now I take bags of it to tournaments with me all the time. The trick (like proper hydration) is to keep munching little handfuls all day before you feel weak and foggy. Also, then you will never be caught feeling stuffed and bloated right when they call your division. Hope this helps some folks. Back to lurking... Tang Soo! "Between Colonialism and Nationalism: Soldiers, Bureaucrats, Artists and Intellectuals in Korea, 1931-1950" Call for Papers While acknowledging the violent and unique aspects of Japanese colonialism in Korea (1910-1945) and the defensive and democratic aspects of Korean nationalism, this conference also questions the dichotomy that is assumed to exist between Japanese colonialism and Korean nationalism, and between Japanese colonialism and post-1945 intervention by Soviet and American forces in Korea. Through critical, empirically based histories of intellectual and social developments in and around Korea between 1931 and 1950, we seek to add both depth and variation to terms like "colonial modernity," "colonial legacy," and "nationalist resistance." In examining the 1930s and 1940s, we seek to formulate new narrative strategies for writing the histories of individuals, institutions, and consciousness during these two decades of displacement, mobilization, and then civil war. By examining the parallels and interaction between Japanese colonialism and Korean nationalism in the 1930s, and between colonial modernity and nation-state building efforts in post-1945 Korea, we seek a more critical understanding of the ideology and practice of colonialisms and nationalisms in Korea, Northeast Asia, and in Korean diasporic communities during this turbulent period. We expect that this conference will result in the publication of a volume of broad interest to scholars of Korea and East Asia. This international conference will take place on the campus of the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, from May 3 through May 6, 2001. The papers are to be completed one-month before the conference. The conference chair will then distribute copies of the papers to the conference participants, and conference participants are expected to contribute to the discussion of all the papers. By October 1, 2000, scholars interested in participating are invited to send a 300-word abstract of their current, unpublished research, along with a brief curriculum vitae, to: Henry H. But to be honest, I don`t really think of the three styles as being separate entities. We simply feel they are part of "Martial Art" we do. Of course, there are many students who don`t do Eskrima or don`t do HKD. Most of the best ones, however, have some skills in more than one style (with TKD being the base). We simply enjoy mixing things, introducing new ideas etc. and we don`t think we are diluting our TKD. I think our ideas are quite similar to those of Mark Gajdostik. For example, when we do sparring, we sometimes do ITF style, WTF style, but also wrestling type ground fighting, stick sparring, stick sparring combined with kicks and throws etc. I don`t say we are good at all these things, but we enjoy it and try to learn as much as possible, to get accustomed to it. During the last month, we competed in an ITF style tournament, WTF style, Eskrima event, and got medals in all of these. During the last one we met some Jiu-jitsu guys and one of our students went for a friendly match with one of their fighters, and also did well. We simply try to have fun...
