I don't have much specifics, but the information I have received from several sources was that it had to do with espionage/intelligence - which could of course include assassination attempts. BTW: His name is Choi Jung Hwa. A funny sidenote: the very same day he was let out of prison, he was promoted by his father. At the time I believe he received either a 6th or a 7th dan. Now he holds an 8th dan. I can only comment that I doubt that it was a proven assassination attempt on the president, because if it was I doubt that he would see the daylight so soon. I think that he was only in prison for a few years. Our school is fairly "easy" compared to yours - with only one tae geuk pr belt and koryo for black - no additionals. The kukkiwon-scheme is even easier with only the 8 tae geuks up to 1st dan (koryo for 1st dan is a western thing - it is really a 2nd dan requirement). I also noticed that you included an ITF 2nd dan requirement for 1st dan - the pattern Kwang - Gae. I calculated that min. time to 1st dan was 5 years and 10 months. What's the the avarage time spent? In the club I work out an active student uses 2 - 2,5 years to reach 1st dan. This difference is ok and only shows that different belts mean different things with different instructors. I mean no disrespect with these comments. If your requirements make sense to you and your students - then stick with them. However, I would kindly ask you to reconsider the following statement on your webpage: "Time requirements obviously will vary from school to school, but 6 months in between each promotion test is a minimum in most legitimate organizations." For Taekwondo this is simply not so. Neither the Kukki-won (WTF) nor the ITF have time limits or recomendations for more than 3 years give or take a year (usually take ...). "Taekwon-Do Times" ran a news blurb about the General's son being taken into custody over this. As far as I have seen there was no follow up in the news (MA or otherwise). However, the General's son is now not in jail, from what I have seen in TKD Times and on the internet. His name is Choi, Jung Hwa and is an 8th dan. I don't know if he holds an oice in the ITF, though I suspect he would. Hope this helps. Taekwon, Chris "Every experience of beauty points to infinity." Ray - ------------------------------------------------------------------ Dear Martial Arts Enthusiast, We want to remind you of and cordially invite you to the USA Karate/US JuJitsu/ US Kobudo Nationals Championships and combined Halls of Fame and National Tournament on July 14-15-16. This is the USAKF's 26th annual event and we hope you can attend. We will be in Canton, Ohio, just South of Akron-Cleveland, and are within driving distance of most East Coast, Southeast, and Midwest cities. The competition has always been spectacular and this year we will include the US Ju-Jitsu Federation. The facilities are great, the competition will be fun and we are sure that you will agree that this is the best ever. We are going strong. As you know, we changed our mission from representing the complicated bureaucracy of the Olympic Committee to that of developing karate in the USA. That always was and still is our real pleasure. ABOUT THE USAKF --- The USAKF is constantly expanding its interests and includes many important national organizations and their histories. We do GOOD Things for Karate in the USA! We must NOT forget our history and values. And, the USAKF does have the history, many of the Americašs Top Leaders have joined and certified their rank with USAKF OUR GOALS --- There are many Karate-ka through out the USA that work in one "area or another" of Karate. Our Federation is for ALL Karate-ka! The "Competition" program is just one slice of the pie, but we have great and orderly competitions. You can be assured that the referees are properly trained, know the rules, and that you will be treated justly and fairly. Do we > earn our rewards merely by being considered good enough, not > by actually > performing? Hm. No disrespect intended, but.... I guess if you're looking for your rewards at a tournament you'll find them at a tounament. If you're looking for rewards in your relationships or inside of yourself, you'll find them there. Looks like Ms. Kim wasn't looking for a trophy or medal as a reward, she was looking for something a little more meaningful and lasting. I could be wrong, but "Winning a medal/trophy" isn't a tenet of taekwondo, is it? (Although in some schools you would think so...) What Ms. Kim did, knowing full well the issues M. Segovia illustrated *and not wavering*, is the epitome of not only good sportsmanship, but is the epitome of a loving, hornorable and giving human being. I would be more honored to meet Ms. Kim and shake her hand than whoever wins the gold medal this summer, whos "victory" will soon be "yesterdays news" after the next olympic games come around and another player takes his/her place. Ms. Kims accomplishment will be remembered for much longer than that, by many more people. The rewards that are being discussed here are in two totally different universes. What Ms. Kim will get will be an everlasting victory over Ego and selfishness, a lifelong reward that will never fade or be overshadowed by "the next guy", what the Gold medal winner will get will be a hunk of medal showing that they can kick butt in the ring. Ms. Kim, I salute you. And some day I hope to shake your hand. The world has just gained another positive role-model. And those are getting awfully few and far between. Greg Giddins (ack, back to work....) ------------------------------ From: Ray Terry Date: Mon, 03 Jul 2000 9:18:30 PDT Subject: the_dojang: note from CHOI Jung Hwa Speaking of... This note was posted by a subscriber to the_dojang a few years back. Ray Terry - ------------------------------------------------------------------------- Thank you for your message to our beloved founder of Taekwon-Do, General Choi Hong Hi. Although the International Taekwon-Do Federation is situated in Vienna, Austria, Gen. Choi still resides in Mississauga, Canada. Because of this, Gen. Choi travels sometimes up to ten months in a year, still giving seminars around the world and meeting people. In Taekwon-Do, since all techniques are logically designed with a purpose, they are easy to teach and easy to learn. If one practices Taekwon-Do techniques by closely adhering to the theory of power and training secrets as outlined in the Taekwon-Do manual, learning should be easy and enjoyable. However, too many practioners just try "hard" and find that improvements come very slow. Taekwon-Do techniques require not only hard training but careful observation of the theory. Many find that the double arc-hand block, due to the hand positions and the reverse rotation of the waist, is difficult to perform accurately than it looks. This is due to the fact that not many are used to turning the body in reverse half-facing manner. Taekwon-Do techniques require great accuracy, therefore, the difficulty will be found in trying to perform with precision rather than simply kicking or jumping higher as some believe. It is important to become one's own critique and observe one's movements with great scrutiny, not be happy that he/she is performing well and therefore give up trying to improve even further. Good luck in your endeavour.
