Thank you. < SNIP > You should ask your instructor, although he may or may not tell you. In my school we start with breaks at the intermediate level (green belt). The requirement is one break with a hand technique and one with a kick. The number of boards differ from individual to individual. The expectation is that you will do different, more difficult techniques as you progress and increase the breaking load. For instance, if you broke a single board with a side kick at green belt you may be asked to do a single board spin-hook kick speed break at red belt. At Il-dan I expect a and technique through a block. Additional commentary can be found at http://www.garciatkd.com/ICMAR1800.htm Good luck! Ray - ------------------------------------------------------------ On Tuesday July 4th at 10am the Cabinet will be informed about the new Romanization system. This is not required, I hear, but it's nice to keep everyone at the top of government informed of what's going on before they see it on the news. Shortly thereafter, at 11:30 am, the Minister of Culture and Tourism will announce the details of the new system to the public at a press conference. After lunch, Korea's two English language newspapers, neither of which have ever followed the now former system with any consistency, will likely begin writing editorials about how the now former system was fine and shouldn't have been changed. A few foreigners can be predicted to write these English language papers also claiming that MR-based is perfect and shouldn't have been abandoned. Unfortunately they will not actually be able to use MR in these numerous letters to the editor. I've never even heard of anyone writing the Herald or Times encouraging them to use the critical diacriticals, even decades before it was a computer issue. I don't mean anything to anyone here when I say this and perhaps shouldn't say this much, but the thought did occur to my little self here. Anyway... The new system becomes legally binding for government functions when it is formally proclaimed(=koshi-ed/gosi-ed) in the kwanbo/gwanbo. This should happen within the next few days. Road signs (and annaep'an/annaepan at tourist spots, etc.) are given until December 31, 2005 to make the change. Government publications that use the now former system may continue to exist until February 28, 2002. Among the many issues yet to be finalized are at what level the Ministry of Education is going to have the new system taught in schools, how strongly the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade is going to encourage (or force?) the new system's use in passports, and more husok choch'i/jochi. peter schroepfer ------------------------------ From: HwarangTSD@aol.com Date: Tue, 4 Jul 2000 10:04:26 EDT Subject: the_dojang: re: aau tourney Rick, the same thing just happened here. I fact I didn't even know about the AAU tourney till it was over. However; althought the TSD forms are variations of japanese forms, it is important to remember that the aau has a policy of honoring all tkd poomse/hyung and like it or not, these forms are old style tkd forms. While i disagree with the inclusion of these forms as taekwondo per se, i applaud the auu on its non organizational bias. By this, I mean that it doesn't matter if one is ITF, WTF, ATA or other Taekwondo style practictioner. This makes it possible for all TKD practitioners to have a venue for atheletic irrespective of the instructors afiliation. I like this idea personally, because how many americans who are not involved in tkd, know the difference between kukki-taekwondo and tang soo do? None. This allows even those non kukki-tkd guys to spar with the kukki guys, possibly allowing the spread of sport taekwondo. And if you really think about it, thats what we want. To introduce as many people as possible to the benefits of kukki-tkd. frank ------------------------------ From: Anders Torvill Bjorvand Date: Tue, 04 Jul 2000 16:02:10 +0200 Subject: the_dojang: Choi Jung Hwa imprisoned from 1984-1990 Dear everybody, from my time in "the other list", I found this statement from the knowledgeable Kim Sol of the USTU: "In 1984, his son, ITF 6th Dan, Choi Joon Hwa [now ITF General Secretary] was arrested for conspiracy to assassinate South Korean political figures, convicted, and sentenced to prison." He goes on to stating that he was released in 1990. He is not so clear as to whether he received the 7th dan while actually in prison or immediately on release. However, he got his 8th dan in 1994, only 4 years after. The USTU really, really knows WTF TKD and does it very well. The AAU doesn't do TKD as well, but they have a massive Junior Olympics that works and includes 24 (or more?) different types of competitions -- and overall they make it work very well. Surely they could each take some hints from each other. But I'd never hold my breath. ------------------------------ From: Ray Terry Date: Tue, 04 Jul 2000 8:39:07 PDT Subject: the_dojang: . ------------------------------ End of The_Dojang-Digest V7 #445 ******************************** It's a great day for Taekwondo!
