Obviously you have never heard of organization such as the SCA. This is a group of people that wish to create an environment of fun and learning. It is not meant to be for serious martial arts. It is a gaming society. I imagine that is one of the motivations behind the change. It sure doesn't make pronunciation by foreigners any easier though! I've spent sometime looking for the TKD times article or other stuff and haven't found it. If you have could you post it here? Thanks Robert Martin From: "Michael Choi" Date: Wed, 05 Jul 2000 01:31:37 EDT Subject: the_dojang: Thank you I thank all of you who have replied to my post inquiring about Choi Jung Hwa and his conviction. This information is very helpful. Although such actions are demoralizing, it does not detract from ITF's curriculum. Hopefully, the continuing goodwill between North and South Korea will spill into Taekwondo and we will see a reconciliation between WTF & ITF. To all my Hapkido colleagues, don't worry, Hapkido is still "the bomb!" I'm training in hapkido every night. There's nothing like it. Although I wish I could spend more time training. Hopefully, the >continuing goodwill between North and South Korea will spill into Taekwondo >and we will see a reconciliation between WTF & ITF. > The following is FYI. No flames or wars desired or intended. Carl W. From the June, 1999 edition of "Human Weapon", the official magazine of the International TaeKwon-Do Federation (quoting Master Choi Jung Hwa, Secretary-General of the ITF, at a seminar given in Britian): Question from the Floor: "In a recent ITF newsletter it talked about original TaeKwon-Do being reintroduced into South Korea, is this a possibility?" Master Choi: "As you know, TaeKwon-Do, "original" TaeKwon-Do, in South Korea is a political issue. The South Korean government made it a policy to erase original TaeKwon-Do forever in South Korea and that is because when you have the original you cannot have the other to claim that it is the original. There is still room for the Korean government and the ITF. The WTF was born through the idea to destroy the ITF by the then regime. Those regimes now having disappeared, it is not the priority of the South Korean government to replace the ITF with the WTF. I think that the government has a lot of agenda now because for the first time in Korean history we have a democratically elected government. One of the first things is to restore the economy and the other, of course, is to dismantle the government structures which were run by the Korean CIA and that, you know, is going to take some time. When that is done, even when we don't try, I think the government of Korea will show the initiative to bring back the original" TaeKwon-Do to South Korea. The other organization, knowing this, fear that when the "original" is reintroduced to South Korea, their time will be over. It is not if, but only a case of when. I just hope that General Choi will be healthy to see that day." ________________________________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free E-mail from MSN Hotmail at http://www.hotmail.com ------------------------------ From: Daniel Monjar Date: Wed, 05 Jul 2000 11:16:49 -0400 Subject: the_dojang: Ready for a good laugh? If you don't enjoy jogging for its own sake, spend 7 minutes doing something you like and you'll be better off." So do we go back to the "original" TKD as currently practiced by the ITF or go back to the "original" TKD as described by CHOI Hong-hi in his 1965 book, Taekwon-Do: The Art of Self-Defence, or do we go back to the "original" TKD of the 50s, Karate-do? Ray Terry raymail@hpwsrt.cup.hp.com ------------------------------ From: TaoArt@aol.com Date: Wed, 5 Jul 2000 12:12:25 EDT Subject: the_dojang: Knife Fights Ray writes: << The vast majority of all knife fights are a surprise for the 'good guy', thus you will probably not have time to get your own knife, asssuming that you carry one. However (stealing from Marc MacYoung), the best knife grip in a fight is however you end up holding the knife and the best stance is however you end up standing, if you can get to your knife. It all happens VERY quickly. >> Amen to that. Many who is using a knife consciously (as opposed to grabbing a kitchen knife in a rage and lunging at their target) will *hide* the blade until the fight begins. You often won't know that a knife was used on you until after the fight is done and you realize you are bleeding. Best to train being able to fight from *any* stance and *any* grip. My suggestion: ONLY ever pull a knife when you are *certain* that your life is in danger. It is a felony in many states to even show a knife in a public place. It is called "brandishing a weapon". If you pull it, try to keep it hidden behind until the last possible moment. I will stand by the "protect the knife" idea of having the knife in the hand that is furthest from the assailant as a preferred stance. I would use my free hand to grab the guy and pull him in (limiting his own fighting range and response) and then impale him as many times as it takes to create an avenue of escape for myself. My priority is not to kill or maim him. It is to escape. Slashing, in my opinion, only extends the length of time that I am in danger. Impale in a place that won't cause alot of blood to be spurted onto me, shove him aside (or into the others in multiple assailant scenarios) and run like the dickens. Remember: Keep your eyes on his hands. If you can't see his hands, assume a weapon. Only present the *outside* of your arms for blocking/deflecting as these can take numerous cuts. The inside holds all your "vital cables". This fall we will be hosting another Knife/Counter Knife course in Waltham, MA with Michael deBethencourt from Sigarms. If you want to know the gruesome facts and details, this is a great 8 hour course. I will also be giving a Defensive Knife course at the American Women's Self Defense Assoc. annual conference in Seattle this August. For more info on the conference, visit www.awsda.org.
