Last time I was in San Diego I got to car jack, abduct and mug people. :-) Marc MacYoung and I were down there doing a spot for a local news on safety and awareness. Thanks to everyone who responded. Again, I'm not sure of my schedule yet, since I will only be down there 6 days and I think three of those are taken by amusement parks already. (My sister is getting Yi Saeng and I tickets) I think I will try and Visit GM Bong Soo Han. Besides being a pioneer of HKD here in America and the recommendations from people on this list, I have always been a Billy Jack fan. It can be found at the following URL: http://www.sejong.or.kr/c_5data.htm If you've been keeping up with the reports in the Korean press, you've no doubt heard every gripe and complaint about the new system in everything from columns to editorials to interviews. While it might be difficult for foreigners to pronounce correctly, this new system has one very strong point -- it allows Hangul to be represented entirely in latin characters. (As Mr. Burdick pointed out) This allows the entire Korean alphabet to be represented in digital format, especially web and email addressing. (The "internet" doesn't recognize diacritics or special characters.) The new system also eliminates confusions when transliterating romanization back into Hangul and eliminates pronunciation difficulties due to inconsistencies in the McCune-Reischauer system. Incidentally, Taekwondo would now be spelled "Taegwondo". Here are some others, Hapkido -> becomes -> Hapgido Kuksulwon -> becomes -> Guksulwon Taekyon -> becomes -> Taekkyeon Tang Soo Do -> becomes -> Tangsudo - - Ryan Shroyer Korean Linguist, USN http://ryanshroyer.tripod.com ------------------------------ From: Graham Hills Date: Thu, 6 Jul 2000 10:10:12 +0200 Subject: the_dojang: McNinja with Fries This site looks like some of the old news ads where you send money and don't even get a thank you. Can one improve his flexibility at my age? Help me with some advice. Recommendations on good blades to carry. - ---end quoted message--- Swiss army knife, IMHO, may be the most useful thing ever created. If I can't fix it with my Swiss and some duct tape, I don't want it. If you're wanting to carry for some defensive use, the Gerber LST is a good choice. The blade is good steel and the spring can be worked so that the blade flicks right open (with a little practice). ________________________________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free E-mail from MSN Hotmail at http://www.hotmail.com ------------------------------ From: JSaportajr@aol.com Date: Thu, 6 Jul 2000 08:14:34 EDT Subject: the_dojang: Re: Hapkido In a message dated 7/5/00 9:34:48 AM Eastern Daylight Time, the_dojang-owner@hpwsrt.cup.hp.com writes: << To all my Hapkido colleagues, don't worry, Hapkido is still "the bomb!" The Delica is and excellent carry and only costs about $45. The best is yet to come though for us martial artists. Coming out in the Fall (around september) will be Sypderco's new knife the "Gunting" it was design by a martial artist for martial artists. Designed by Bram Frank it is a wonderful tool. It was designed to be actually used closed and has a unique function of having a kinetic opening ramp. The design allows the user to utilize it as an impact tool (similar to the Kubotan) for pressure point striking. It can also be used to assist in joint locking and controling manuvers. And best of all it can escalate in a nasty situation for slice and dice. The blade is just under 3 1/4 inches. Making it legal in ALL 50 states and allowable for carry by FAA regulations onto airplanes (although some gate security people have trouble remebering that) Anybody wanting more information may want to contact Bram Frank at: Arnisman@aol.com Or log on to Blade Forums at www.BladeForums.com Michael Rowe Self Defense America ------------------------------ From: MRowe@ids.sitel.net Date: Thu, 6 Jul 2000 07:54:48 -0500 Subject: the_dojang: Get Real People These young teens are having a bit of fun with the net. It is the unimaginative adults that have no clue. Us adults that have retained our imaginations and fun loving natures can sit back and smirk a little. I used to play a game called T.A.G. (The Assasins Game) We had real missions and recieved real training. (in our imaginative world of fun) We used Paint Ammo and (very realistic looking weaponry) and followed many conventions in engagement. We took ourselves very serious in our play. But it was play and we knew it. Others around us never understood the advertising that we put out for recruiting new members into our fun recreation. This is the same venue. What these kids are laughing behind your backs is that you take them way too seriously in this fun they are having. They are teens and they know it. They are not Martial Arts Masters, they have no real clue about stealth and other such Shinobi skills. What they have is imgaination and fun. I looked over the entire site and enjoyed the fun in it. Nothing more. Hell now if they were offering Certification in these "deadly skills" that we take years to teach people (it does take only months to teach these skills - only years to perfect them) and was being offered by an adult who wanted to give this to me for the low low cost of say ????uhhhhm - $300 then I would be paranoid too. Let the kids have their fun. Down around 1 in. (blade length) and they tend to let it pass through. In other countries even a 1 in. locking blade is illegal as carry on and must be checked through.
