Grandmasters Ji, Han Jae, Bong Soo Han, Gedo Chang and a few others who's names escape me now were all there. The tournament was promoted as a Hapkido tournament and was opened to all styles. The medals that were awarded came from the International Hapkido Karate Association. The rules were a little different from what you would have seen on the open circuit at that time. Kicks to the back were worth a half point and sweeps, takedowns were legal as long as you followed up. The turnout was great and the competition excellent. I still have my Gold medal on the wall. Thanks for the question it was a good trip down memory lane. I have a Korean friend at my dojang who wants to know how to print Hangul documents his friends send him. His PC is running Windows 98. He has a Hewlett Packard Inkjet Printer, an 832C. Heyyyy... Ray, don't you work for...? I think these are HTML pages, not Word docs. I don't know if Korean/Hangul drivers came with the printer. Choi's 1974 edition Anders Torvill Bjorvand wrote: It has a 1965-copyright, but seems to have been printed in 1974. No indication of revision is made, but I don't feel sure. I do not care how old the book really is - I only want the 1965-info. I don't have both in front of me Anders, but yes, I believe there were quite a few significant changes. The 1974 book, as I recall, was much more like the Encyclopedia in content. His earlier book included much more karate training methods and had more information on romanization. One thing to check is the Hoshinsul section (self defense). If it says something like "these techniques are the most advanced in taekwondo, and the most interesting," then that is the section where Ki-Tae Chung's techniques replace those of the earlier edition. Gen. Choi, upon arriving in Canada, wanted Chung to stop teaching in Toronto and make room for Choi's guy (Park, I believe). Chung proved he was a good ol' t'aekwondo guy and should stay by letting Choi take photos of all his hapkido defense and calling it tkd. If your edition has that stuff, then you still need to find the 1965 edition (there is an even earlier edition in Korean). But at least you have some early documentation on hapkido! :) Take care, Dakin Burdick burdickd@indiana.edu ------------------------------ From: "John Groff" Date: Tue, 11 Jul 2000 09:58:54 -0700 Subject: the_dojang: Re: The_Dojang-Digest V7 #465 Anders Torvill Bjorvand wrote: "I just received my TKD-book my majgen Choi. It has a 1965-copyright, but seems to have been printed in 1974." Hi Anders, The older book (first english edition) is c. 1965, and is 304 pages long. The book is interesting because it shows Choi's style before the breakaway from the Korean Gov't, and is devoid of most politics which came about later. You'll know the other book because it is either 533 pages (later edition) or around 400-something. Also, the 'artists are wearing the "ITF-style" doupak in the later book, while in the first prt, Choi & company are clad in white doupak a'la shotokan. . .If the later book is what you got, don't lament too much--it has good points as well, including a cool historical photo on one of the rear pages showing most of the kwan heads in 1959. If you got the later book & would like copies of the unique parts (those describing Shotokan hyung) in the older one, email me. Jesse ********************** After training in jkd for about 5 years now....i got my ass kicked last week. I work in law enforcment .... and sometimes as a store detective for a retail chain. I was called to the front of this store after an individual set our alarm system off and wouldn't show his reciept. It was a stocky gentlemen, middle aged....middle class. He was clearly upset at the inconvienence. I didn't want to seem threatening to him...so as i talked with him i put my hands behind my back. stupid. out of no where, he pushd me with both hands. I recovered and grabbed him by the throat and delivered a low kick to his knees to knock him over. Stupid. He didn't knock over, instead he punched me in the side of the head. I reacted by hitting him back. I jumped back and got in my fighting stance (power side forward) and in that time, he kicked me right across the side of my head and knocked me cold out. I'm so angry and dissapointed in myself. I feel like the last 5 years have been for nothing. I didn't do what i should of. I know what i should have done, He pushed me so hard that i had to take a good 3 steps to get in range. I shouldn't have taken those 3 steps, i should have gotten in my stance and been ready... I'm telling you guys this because i know you'll understand. what do i do now? do i continue to train in this way...because it sure as hell didn't work this time...... opinions? kev ------------------------------ From: Ray Terry Date: Tue, 11 Jul 2000 11:58:59 PDT Subject: the_dojang: . ------------------------------ End of The_Dojang-Digest V7 #466 ******************************** It's a great day for Taekwondo!
