It is demonstrated via an ITF Poomse. I am guessing that the sine wave is the slight downward motion of the body at the knees prior to launching a technique. (if that is wrong, please ignore the rest of this post and set me straight). If this is so, what is the practical use of this "dropping down" prior to a punch ? It would seem to telegraph your intention in a self defense situation. It also LOOKS like just added motion that serves no purpose. ( but perhaps the demonstrator performs the technique poorly, or I am just not looking at this correctly?) I can see that putting your legs into the punch would add power to the technique, but my instructors tell me that the "push/pull" of the upper body and the action of the hips is where the power of the punch comes from. I can certainly understand the desire for more power in ANY technique, so my question is: Is the sine wave the answer? thanks in advance, respectfully yours, dave weller wtf tkd student "Practice a thousand hours and you learn self discipline. Along with that push a little bending of the board helps for the little ones, too. :) Of course, sometimes our 'help' goes awry... last test cycle another BB and I were selecting boards for breakers and found ourselves looking for one that was going to break if you breathed on it ( for a little guy ). We found one and I handed it to the holder, who 'tested' it with a rap of the knuckles. The board splintered, one of our masters called me down with a loud (and smiling) "MR. ATCHINSON!!", and everybody got a good laugh. >> lol...i've experienced that one before too :). it's really worth it to ensure they break their first board. hopefully theyll have the technique and timing if we're putting them up to board breaking. still...cant beat the expression on those little faces...first awe at themselves, then checking to make sure everyone else saw what they just did, then pride and confidence. wonderful :) melinda Chajonshim Martial Arts Supply http://www.chajonshim.com ------------------------------ From: ChunjiDo@aol.com Date: Sat, 15 Jul 2000 00:09:19 EDT Subject: the_dojang: Re: congrats In a message dated 7/14/00 2:59:55 PM Pacific Daylight Time, the_dojang-owner@hpwsrt.cup.hp.com writes: << Congrats to list member Anne Chase for being named a member of the WTF Legislative Committee. >> way to go, master chase :) Chajonshim Martial Arts Supply http://www.chajonshim.com ------------------------------ From: "S. All I said was that, so far as the Frank Dux myth was concerned, part of the reason to be suspicious of the whole thing was, a.) that Hong Kong would be the site a fight-to-the-death festival (in the movie, it was supposedly "underground" so the authorities would not know about it?), and b.) it is rather inconsistent that Cantonese speaking Chinese people would refer to a martial arts tournament of any type taking place in Hong Kong using a Japanese word like "kumite." Charles Roberts - ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- - ----- Response: Dear Charles, You have got me wrong. Never meant that you are streo-typed. What I was trying to say that this Frank Dux guy doesn't sound like one who has travelled to Hong Kong at all. Otherwise, he would have come up with a more credible story. I have read a lot about martial artists who claimed that they have fight death duels. As far as I know, even in the most corrupted Asian countries. Killing a person will still land you in jail. One the easier way to check the credibility of their claims is to go to the nearest police station where the duel is supposed to be held. S. H.
