This is incorrect. Particularly, the Okinawan styles have a strong tradition of rather complex movement of the hip inherited from the southern Chinese styles and from their native art. For reference look at some of the Tsunami videos. I highly recommend their 'Uchinadi' video as it really demontrates this. Some modern Shotokan has eliminated some of this motion in favor of a more linear approach. This happened from about 1935 onward when Funakoshi, Gichin's son, Yoshitaka, started making changes for better acceptance by the Japanese budo community. There are a number of excellent articles about this in Dragon Times magazine by Harry Cook, the preemninent historian of Shotokan and Japanese karate.. Also, as all of the Korean forms are for the most part derivative of the Okinawan/Japanasized froms transmitted through the 1940's, it is interesting to see who uses the "modern' Shotokan-like forms versus the older Okinawan methods. If one wanted controversy, ou could even suggest that the traditional, more effective methods could be indicated in this way. It would be interesting to show these to an Okinawan master of the older ways and get their take on it. Lastly, Hsing I, Wing Chun, and many other styles use this motion and it is taught from the beginning. It isn't called anything; its just the best way to deliver power. You can look at Yang, Jwing Ming's videos and see it in a wide variety of styles and applications. It is also used in both warming up exercises and Qigong for both old Okinawan and current Chinese styles.
