I'm a certified class A umpire in the ITF. "Lite" contact to the head is allowed with hands and feet. Legal targets are listed as "face and head". Illegal targes are: "back of neck, side of neck, and throat." Legal techniques are: "punch, backfist/sidefist strike, knifehand strike, reverse knifehand strike, and all standing/jumping kicks." Points are awarded for "legal technique to legal target." The match is stopped only for fouls. All official ITF tournament competition is now continous sparring with "lite" contact. This is for all ranks, white to black belt. Regards Robert Martin A-4-336 ITF/USTF In the 21 years I have been training, teaching, and competing in tournaments, I have yet to know of one ITF tournament that allows hand contact to the head...trust me...I get called on it no less than twice each match...open style tournaments (which include Japanese, Okinawan, Chinese styles, etc) are the only tournaments I have attended that allow hands to head...Tae Kwon Do Tournaments...regardless of ITF, WTF, USTU...whatever...have never allowed hand contact to the head...at least not to my knowledge...if you know of any TKD tourneys that allow hand contact to head...please let me know...I can do without the warnings and loss of points for striking the head with my hands...I lose more matches that way... All belts are allowed to kick to the head... In areas where GTF is present there are sometimes mixed GTF/ITF tournements, but I'm not sure what kind of rules would be enforced there...it just depends on who's hosting I would think ;-) - -Bryan ------------------------------ From: ChunjiDo@aol.com Date: Tue, 18 Jul 2000 22:41:48 EDT Subject: the_dojang: Re: knives on board regarding knives on airlines and specifically the regulations by united airlines, here's the straight scoop from a thirty year airline veteran: "U R CORRECT ON THE FAA RESTRICTIONS. HOWEVER, THE WORDS "OR THAT APPEAR MENACING" ALSO ARE CONTAINED IN THE RULES. NOBODY SEEMS TO WANT TO DEFINE THAT PHRASE. FOUR INCHES WITH A FIXED BLADE IS AN AUTOMATIC NO-NO. ANYTHING SHORTER THAT HAS A SERRATED BLADE HTAT IS FIXED OR LOOKS NASTY IS ALSO A CHECK ONLY ITEM. YOUR EVERYDAY POCKET KNIFE IS NOT A PROBLEM. JUDGEMENT IS A PART OF THE DECISION TO CHECK OR NOT TO CHECK. SCISSORS THAT ARE INORDINATELY LONG ARE ALSO CHECKED. NOT SO MUCH AS TO THE USE OF THE LOL THAT HAS THEM, BUT WHAT IF THEY WERE GRABBED BY THE WRONG PERSON. EASILY MAY BECOME A WEAPON. I HAVE MADE PSGRS CHECK TWO INCH FIXED BLADES, AND HAVE LET MOST BE CARRIED ON. SMALL POCKET VARIETY BUCK KNIVES DO NOT HAVE TO BE CHECKED. HOPES THIS ANSWERS UR QUESTION." melinda Chajonshim Martial Arts Supply http://www.chajonshim.com ------------------------------ From: ChunjiDo@aol.com Date: Tue, 18 Jul 2000 23:03:17 EDT Subject: the_dojang: Re: leader of the pack In a message dated 7/18/00 6:28:16 AM Pacific Daylight Time, the_dojang-owner@hpwsrt.cup.hp.com writes: << Today, I was the senior student. Point sparring includes hand techniques to the head. Punches, backfists and ridgehands to the protected head areas. No face contact, light contact to the protector. We usually spar WTF rules in class and in tournaments, but the AAU Nationals gave us an opportunity to try point sparring. My students thought it was fun. I prefer Olympic style sparring personally, but I see the advantages of point sparring. Most of my adult students do not have Olympic aspirations, and the point sparring allows them to compete without placing their livelihoods at risk to sleepers among them. (Y'all have sleepers right? Those black belt students who don't test but keep training. Technically cho dan, but in reality should be Sah dan or higher but never tested? Or black belts in other styles now working in TKD?)
