As an instructor, I tell my students to practice, practice, practice.....so if your wife and daughter are practicing at home, I think it's excellent. If they aren't making contact, it would seem to me that they have more control than you are perhaps giving them credit for? As for accidents, they are just as likely to happen while practicing at the school as they are at home. From my perspective as a woman martial artist, I think the fact that your wife and daughter are becoming confident enough to launch kicks at each other at home (and I presume also defending against them) is awesome. The hardest thing for women to overcome in self-defense situations is their social conditioning (don't fight back, always be nice) and the adrenal response. Perhaps if you look at their play kicking as role playing for survival, your perspective on the potential danger will change. For whatever it's worth... Silke Schulz ------------------------------ From: Oregfightingarts@aol.com Date: Mon, 31 Jul 2000 20:46:44 EDT Subject: the_dojang: Family "Practice" Ahhhhhh......This brings up many happy training memories! I had friends that joined MA after I did, and I made a few good friends in the various dojo & dojang as well. We went to school, church, played hockey, lived close, hung out, etc...together. Later, when I started TKD, a group of us hung out, trained, lived, partied & and generally raised hell together. If it wasn't for my friends' constant attacks and living room matches, I don't think I would be as good as I am today. In TKD, we found something that we all personally enjoyed, and something that we enjoyed doing with (or to) others. Even today, when we train at each others schools, I still find myself taking shots at the short hairs on the back of their head, and catch them doing the same to me. Thinking back, we had only one minor nose incident, but that involved just a tiny wee bit of beer(s)...but I wont get in to that one. Last Christmas, I was ambushed by my younger sister (trained her to 3rd gup) as I entered my mother's home. The mock combat was short and sweet and ended with a pretty good lock flow sequence. My mother just shook her head and wondered why my sister attacks me when she always ends up in some sort of pain....lol. On a side note, during high school, my mother made me take a few of her kitchen cabinet fronts to wood shop to refinish them and remove my footprints. The dojang is not the only place to train and learn. If you have safety concerns, set some target limitations. Anyway, if you care to share the other email lists you were on and the distinctions between the list I would be curious. On the other hand, if you believe it is not an interesting topic I understand. I have been on a few other lists and it is always good to do a reality check to see if your opinions match up with others. I also agree that this is a well run list and getting better all the time. BILL DEWART ACADEMY OF TAE KWON DO AAU TAEKWONDO HDQTRS. 988 OAK STREET SAN FRANCISCO, CA 94117 (415) 864-4827/e-mail tkdbill@pacbell.net July 26, 2000 Dear Friends: September is coming and that means the beginning of a new AAU year and, of course, the FRIENDSHIP TOURNAMENT VI. The event this year will be held at Serramonte High School at 699 Serramonte Blvd., Daly City, CA 94105 on Saturday, October 14th. The school is located only ten minutes outside of San Francisco off of Interstate 280 and up the block from the Serramonte Shopping Center. It is convenient, easy to get to and, most importantly, has plenty of free parking. I would like to take this opportunity to invite all of you to join us again this year for what should be an outstanding event. As always we will provide free AAU membership for the 2000/2001 season for everyone who pre-registers by October 1st. For those of you who are school owners this is the time to either renew your AAU school membership or, if you have not done it before, do it now for the first time. Remember the AAU provides the best insurance policy available anywhere with $5 million of liability coverage for only $50 a year no matter how many locations you have. If you need a school package simply call 1-800-228-4872 and request a Taekwondo Club membership package. Believe me you will be saving a lot over whatever insurance you currently have for your dojang. Please let everyone know about this yearıs FRIENDSHIP TOURNAMENT so that they can make plans to attend. We are looking to make this the largest AAU event ever held in the Bay Area. With your assistance we will succeed. We will look forward to seeing all of you on October 14th. Peace. Does anyone know how many Kukkiwon certified Masters (4th Dan and above) there are in the United States? Or does anyone know where I can get this information? Thanks in advance Robert Martin ------------------------------ From: Ray Terry Date: Tue, 01 Aug 2000 7:01:07 PDT Subject: Re: the_dojang: Masters > Does anyone know how many Kukkiwon certified Masters (4th Dan and above) > there are in the United States? One source of data, perhaps questionable, indicates that there are just under 6,000 non-Korean Sa Dans+ and just under 45,000 Korean Sa Dans+. I don't have any other way to break it down. Others???
