If you were going to buy a video on self-defense, not a specific martial art, what kinds of things would you be looking to learn? What areas would you want covered? How would you want it taught? I will be filming a video with the working title "Self-Defense Essentials" later this month with Paladin Press. I have the outline and know pretty much what I will be covering. Right now, I am working at ironing out the edges. I'm trying to make sure I put in everything I want, the order of teaching, action scenes outside to show the techniques and principles I will teach being used, etc. I've worked some on it this last month, but was so busy with honeymoon, pictures, thank you cards, etc. So starting today is my big push. I want to rehearse a lot more than I did for my first video so that my presentation is more upbeat, more lively. Note, this video will be quite different from my HKD video. I will do this one in street clothes, not my dobok. It will have a more self-defense and surviving an attack theme than MA. There are plans for another HKD video as well. Probably shoot that sometime next spring or summer. Doubt we can get it in earlier because of my school schedule. This new video will include: - stance, footwork, getting out of the way/offline, blocking - basic strikes/punches, jab, cross, uppercut, hook, combinations; finger jab, slap, palm heel, hammer fist, forarm strike - basic kicks, front kick, push kick, side kick to knee, stomp, scoop kick to knee - getting loose from a grabs - different counters to various attacks. (chokes, bearhugs, etc.) - a few basic falls - a couple basic throws (similar to section in HKD video) - talk about awareness and avoidance - talk about fitness - a section on putting it all together. How to use the strikes and kicks together after getting out of way and blocking, etc. - very little about weapons. Mention guns and knives, but not really show defenses against them in this video. May do some against a stick or club. That's what comes to mind right now, I don't have the outline in front of me. I know I'm leaving out a couple things. Anyway, all suggestions about what to include, how to present, what you would want to see in a self-defense video, what you like about others you have seen, what you don't like, etc. will be greatly appreciated. After reading what you've all written, it seems I've been over critical of a good thing (not surprising for me... :o) ). Instead of looking poorly on the frequent attacks, perhaps I should be joining in, or looking on with a smile. I agree fully that any practice is a good thing as well. I'm still de(re)programming some stuff that got hard coded when I was studying Karate. My old instructor was stern and strict and serious and would have (I think) looked down on any sparring that wasn't entered into formally (bowing to your opponent, clear beginning and ending, etc...). Then again I was young, so I may have gotten that wrong as well. :o) As for any relation to Paul Lynde, I am told he's a distant cousin or uncle or some such... we don't see him during the holidays, so it's hard telling. ;o) Other email lists that I've been on had their share of flame wars, vicious arguments leading into inevitable ad hominim attacks. It seems there's more respect for fellows here than I've seen on other lists. I think I'll be sticking around for a while. thanks again, Jerry Lynde ------------------------------ From: MissIllona@aol.com Date: Tue, 1 Aug 2000 13:14:20 EDT Subject: the_dojang: Re: Women/Girls Training at Home In a message dated 8/1/00 6:47:04 AM Pacific Daylight Time, the_dojang-owner@hpwsrt.cup.hp.com writes: << Perhaps if you look at their play kicking as role playing for survival, your perspective on the potential danger will change. >> And boys do this all the time as they grow up and everyone thinks this is normal ... but if a girl or woman does it ... it is abnormal ? I don't think so. I applaud their enthusiasm in training with one another and having fun at the same time. Just as you should. Women / girls need all the confidence building they can get ... they are told more often to act properly and not do this ... than to do this. And I think all women / girls NEED this in order to feel good about themselves ... I know as a tomboy growing up ... it felt good to me ! :-) Illona ------------------------------ From: MissIllona@aol.com Date: Tue, 1 Aug 2000 13:17:26 EDT Subject: the_dojang: Re: Mock Attacks In a message dated 8/1/00 6:47:04 AM Pacific Daylight Time, the_dojang-owner@hpwsrt.cup.hp.com writes: << Last Christmas, I was ambushed by my younger sister (trained her to 3rd gup) as I entered my mother's home. On a side note, during high school, my mother made me take a few of her kitchen cabinet fronts to wood shop to refinish them and remove my footprints. >> Ahhhhhhhhhhhhh Mark ... you have brought back many happy memories of when I came up in the arts !!!! Loved it ! Without your friends and fellow MA 'helping' you thru the years to get better and more confident with these mock attacks ... where would we be? We dream about it and our friends/family help us live it ! LOL How many others out there had a ball going up in rank this way? Sometimes I feel like Inspector Clueseau (yeah, I know, spelled wrong) when I step into the house after work, I never know where one of my "Kato's" might leap from. Keeps one on his toes and prepared for anything. But seriously, at least in my most humble opinion, I see nothing wrong with the senarios you describe, provided there is no real contact. It is just an indication of how much your family enjoys TKD that they "play" at it at home. As for practicing only in the dojang, I would limit contact sparring to that venue, mainly because the proper protective equipment should be available there, and at your level I don't believe you're ready for unsupervised sparring that involves contact. I wouldn't worry about limiting the suprise attacks unless it gets to the point that you feel someone stands a chance of getting injured. But, all that aside, please talk to your instructor about this and get his opinion. He has watched all of you practice and can better judge whether you should "play rough" at home. There is nothing better, IMHO, than a family that enjoys the same activities TOGETHER! And, there is no better family activity than martial arts.
