That was an awesome Korea vs Japan story but I'll bet many readers would like to know Mr. Hong's Korean first and middle names. (It's quite doubtful that he represented Korea under the name of "Billy") Any help with this? SESilz BTW this reminded me of a story which has become somewhat famous in the WTF TKD community about a similar match from a similar period - the early '60s. As many of us know, Master "Mas Oyama" was born "Mr. Choi" in Korea and had learned a Korean fighting system before immigrating to Japan and adopting his new name and founding his kyokashinkai (spelling?) karate system. Anyhow, in early 1960s Mr. Oyama issued a challenge to the newly formed Korean Taekwondo Association to a team match against his boys in Japan. Korea selected a team of 5 players from different weight categories and, under the leadership of then JiDoKwan President, now WTF Vice President, and always serious tough guy, Chong Woo Lee, and sent them off to Japan. The format of the competition was to contain both breaking and sparring, with breaking taking place first. Korea lost the coin toss and had to send their man up to break first. Master Lee picked the smallest and lightest member of his team, Dong Keun Park (now an active Grandmaster in Jersey City, NJ) to go first. Now there was a palate of roofing tiles in the room from which the competitors were to select their breaking materials. Mr. Park just casually walked over to the pile, but instead of selecting a few pieces, he just smashed the entire stack with a punch. The Japanese fighters huddled-up with Mr. Oyama and after a very short conference, announced they had nothing to go against the likes of what they just saw, and bowed-out of the remainder of the event. I guess you could say that entire team match ended with the first punch. SESilz ------------------------------ From: "G. He told us that he is one of only 2 students who have continually run a Hapkido Dojang from the 1950's. He is located in Taegu which is near to Choi's grave site. We were unable to train with him as time did not permit, however he did run through 5 wrist exercises that he said were original Hapkido warm ups, they are basic locking techniques that you apply to yourself to condition your arms. He had a great presence and was very open with his knowledge of Choi, Dr Kimm spoke with him in more detail about his history as GM Kim didn't speak English. Regards Geoff J. Booth PS. I am listed on the August Clinic at Master Wests fun in the South, however the Korea trip has made it hard for me to attend, have to give my students a little mat time. Apologies for not being able to join everyone on the mat, I will however be there in February with my Wife and hopefully some more of my students. ------------------------------ From: Stickfighter27@cs.com Date: Wed, 2 Aug 2000 22:12:59 EDT Subject: the_dojang: Re: The_Dojang-Digest V7 #514 Hi, I dont post often but I try to when I get a good topic or when i just get the chance. I have a question for all the Masters of TaeKwonDo out there. First off I'm not putting down this man for what he is doing but just curious if its correct in the lines of TaeKwonDo. My Old TKD instructor is a 6th Dan Master and he is somewhat of a good instructor although we had some differences wich is one of the reasons I no longer attend his school. But thats besides the point. My question is I've always heard that If your a Jr. Blackbelt or under a certain age you cannot obtain the title of a "black belt DAN" I've heard of it more on the Poom rank. Why am I asking? Well he my Ex instructor has been promoting kids at the early age of 11 and sometimes earlier to Black belt and giving them the Dan rank title. He actually has one student who is 15 yrs old and a 4th Dan a Master in TKD at 15 yrs old. I have a problem with this one due to this "child" has no idea what life is really about at such an early age. Never the less what it means holding and accepting the title of a Martial Arts Master at the age of 15. He tends to walk around and thinks he is really someone. I have seen him on the streets and talked with him and shared my opinion about his attitude and what it means to even be a black belt period. I am a 2nd Dan black belt but Im 27yrs old and have been a Black belt for at least 10 yrs. I never advanced up the Dan ranks due to I havnt gotten back into a class room environment one because of I dont know of any around my area that Im comfortble learning with to pick back up where I left off. So I mostly train with others on a more private lessons. I dont really care much about the ranks and titles all that much... My concern is if this Master the 6th dan keeps promoting kids at an early age to Dan Ranks and keeps so called Master titles before the age of 16 wich is totally irrelevent. I was at a tourny last year and one of his students 16 was a 3rd dan caught alot of strife from others in other schools about his rank and what he was calling himself. But in reality he didnt know any better cause he has been led to believe he can be called a 3rd dan. In my research and understanding one dont even be considered 1st dan until he reaches the age of 16 up until then its "Poom" correct me if Im wrong please. Thanks Independently training the past 10 yrs. Cory ------------------------------ From: "Tomlinson, Michael E." I don't have access to that list but was sent a copy. The people that are in question and wrote the remarks are also on this list and they know who they are. So know one take offense in my comments please they were only meant to clarify the act of Master Whalen sending a video tape to Korea when he received his 7th dan.
