I am having brain fade here today). I agree that it is bad on the joints. But for roundhouses we do kick on the big bags and we haven't had a problem ... it isn't going against the joint like a hook kick would or sideways like a crescent would. If taught properly and done properly ... I don't see a problem there. You just have to have a good instructor and not learn kicking off of a video or out of a book. I guess he must have been reading a US history book at the time: Great Seal Symbols A Bundle of Thirteen Arrows The American bald Eagle holds in his sinister talon a bundle of thirteen arrows. The arrows denote the power of war. He will need to retest as he was unable to complete his breaking (run Jumping Side Kick). Never-the-less I am still proud of him as he was unable to attend classes last week due to the same reasons as myself. After being gone for a week due to the death of a friend, I was called by Georgene, a friend and fellow classmate, that we were to test on Tuesday, this was Sunday. I prayed I was ready. We tested on... a.. Form, Palgwe Sam Jang b.. 10 Blue Belt Sparring Techniques c.. 6 Advanced One-Step Sparring d.. 6-10 Face Contact e.. Set #3, 3-2-1 Steps f.. 10 Kicking Counter Attacks g.. 22 Movement Defense (my personal Favorite) h.. Breaking: Step-in Turning Side Kick (Thank you Miss Jakki for your tips) The material was both Challenging and fun, The more I learn the more exciting TKD becomes. My instructors are great as are my classmates. I still need a bit of work to better my side kick, with practice it is getting a little better but I aspire to perform a side kick as Miss Jakki does, and for me that could take years. As far as drills, I have made up my own. Start with one leg and do a variety of basic kicks, move to the next leg. I believe Master Kim at Turtle Press has a good video on Kicking and Kicking drills. I also recommend Rob Kamen (a Muay Thai European Champ) who has a great video on bag work drills. THis includes the whole body re, arms, elbows, legs, knees. He also uses punch mitts and body bags. Finally, Marco Lala out of New York makes a fine series. McD... __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Kick off your party with Yahoo! (Chuckle, Chuckle) Danny Dunn So do we go back to the "original" TKD as currently practiced by the ITF or go back to the "original" TKD as described by CHOI Hong-hi in his 1965 book, Taekwon-Do: The Art of Self-Defence, or do we go back to the "original" TKD of the 50s, Karate-do? The US Great Seal looks nothing at all like the Hapkido eagle logo. Yes they both have an eagle (Bald Eagle vs. Golden Eagle) and arrow/s (13 vs. 1), but that is about it. ALL other symbols from the US Great Seal are missing; the stars, the olive branch, the shield, the cloud, Glory, and E Pluribus Unum. Judo, is much like any other Martial Art when it comes to training. They are many Judo, champions out there that would disagree with your few. As a long time Judoka and Black Belt in Judo, I can tell you that we practice practical self defense using throws and armbars. When one practices the thought of self defense should always be a concern. As a practioner of martial Arts for 35 years now I can honestly say that all Martial Arts have value. However in order to gain the benefit of a style one must first be willing to open his mind. To much time is spent on my art is better than your art in our society today. I once heard " it is not the size of man in the fight it is the size of the fight in the man." The bottom line is you will react in a life threatening situation in the same manner in which you train. What ever you feel confident with is what you should work at perfecting. More concentration on the technique and less on where it came from will give you better results. When it is all said and done I don't think that you or anyone else will care if it was Taekwondo, Judo, Muey Tai, Hapkido or just old fashion street fighting that saved you when you needed it. Well enought for now.
