Originally, black trimmed doboks in WTF TKD were only from black belt holders. Nowadays, in many countries including Korea there are more and more coloured belts wearing black or black/red trimmed doboks. On the other hand, there are still some WTF groups which officially disallow it. For example, in the DTU (German Taekwondo Union), you will get lowered scores if you wear black trimmed dobok as a coloured belt in a Poomse competition. But on the same time, many Korean instructors living in Germany (outside the DTU) don`t care whether your dobok is trimmed or not. I even have some Korean promotional videos with Korean coloured belt kids wearing trimmed doboks. I would be glad hearing your opinions on it. How does the situation look like in your school or country? Yep, been by that school many times. They have a large facility with lots of windows. You should see the rainbow of colors running around inside... :) Ray Terry raymail@hpwsrt.cup.hp.com ------------------------------ From: Ray Terry Date: Fri, 11 Aug 2000 6:42:03 PDT Subject: Re: the_dojang: looking for the right dojo > im 15 years old and living in brooklyn ny, i trained in tkd for 2 years > through the tora-dojo (i wasnt happy there) when i was about 7. i am looking > to get back into training but it seems much harder to find a reputable dojo , > please help me! if no one lives in the area please, help me by telling me > important questions to ask and things to look for in a dojo, also are there > any affiliations i should ask about? Gary, Good luck in your search. Hoepfully someone from your area will have info for you. Also check out the various school locators available on our website (see the header of every issue). But one easy thing to watch out for... if they call their school a dojo then they most likely aren't a TKD school or a school a teaches a Korean style. Dojo is a Japanese school. Dojang is what a Korean martial arts school is called. I can't imagine a real TKD instructor calling his/her school a dojo... I'd say the best thing to do is just sit and watch a class or two. See if you like the instructor and the other students. Does it seem like a place you'd like to hang out in and learn? Do the advanced students look like they know something?
