Originally, black trimmed doboks in WTF TKD were only from black belt holders. Nowadays, in many countries including Korea there are more and more coloured belts wearing black or black/red trimmed doboks. On the other hand, there are still some WTF groups which officially disallow it. For example, in the DTU (German Taekwondo Union), you will get lowered scores if you wear black trimmed dobok as a coloured belt in a Poomse competition. But on the same time, many Korean instructors living in Germany (outside the DTU) don`t care whether your dobok is trimmed or not. I even have some Korean promotional videos with Korean coloured belt kids wearing trimmed doboks. I would be glad hearing your opinions on it. How does the situation look like in your school or country? The Bow is a sign of respect and courtesy...as long as you do not look into the eyes...only look in the eyes as a challenge when bowing....otherwise look down or at the chest... The Handshake was used to show empty hand (no weapon) and a sign of good will and no danger and the opposite hand was then crossed underneath for the same reason...to show no weapons in either hand and a non-aggressive gesture... i.e.: When two travelers would meet on a road...especially during the times when highwaymen, thugs, and robbers were often encountered...the bow was used upon greeting for respect, courtesy, and pleasantries to the other (Hi, how you doing...Nice to meet you...Have a nice day, etc)...and the handshake with crossing the opposite hand beneath showed no weapons and no harm intended.... To answer the question: No, you are not effectively greeting them twice. (If this is an inaccurate in any way, I would appreciate correction...thanks) The One and Only... The bow is like saying "I respect you,", and shaking the hand is like "Hello,". Just like sparring (at least how my school does it). You bow, to show respect, then touch fists to show that you're ready to fight. ..............................iain... ------------------------------ From: CKCtaekwon@cs.com Date: Fri, 11 Aug 2000 09:48:48 EDT Subject: the_dojang: Re: The_Dojang-Digest V7 #537 In a message dated 8/11/00 8:23:56 AM Central Daylight Time, the_dojang-owner@hpwsrt.cup.hp.com writes: << Check out their gallery of testing pictures ... purple belts have purple uniforms ... orange belts have orange uniforms. Mark, I would not say you are "greeting" them twice, since it is just one greeting. You are however showing them respect in two different ways, and there is nothing wrong with showing respect to others. In Korea and Japan they bow and shake hands. Basically, they adopted the western handshake but also kept the bow that was their way of showing respect. I do the same depending on who I am with and where I am. One thing that I also do, and have been asked about, is when I give or recieve something from someone, I almost always use two hands, at the least support one hand with the other. This is also to show respect. Always check out a class or two and watch how the students interact. Do they respect each other? Is it an atmosphere you would like to be in? etc. My friend Marc wrote an article in Blackbelt a year ago about the focus of different martial arts that had a good side bar on finding a school that fits you. Do you have access to old issues of Blackbelt? That brings us to another point. What is your goal with martial arts? What focus are you most interested. If you want to compete in the olympics, you need to go with judo, boxing, wrestling, fencing or Taekwondo. If you don't want anything to do with sport, then those would not fit you best and you would be happier with something else. Do you want a hard core school that focuses on fighting and not much more, or do you want a school that is more traditional and teaches forms, older weapons, etc. Do you want a more spiritual focus like some Aikido and Tai chi schools? You should get the point by now. There are a lot of questions to ask yourself. There is also location, cost and time they have class considerations? What fits into your schedule and budget? I wish those things didn't have to be considered, but in reality they do. Hope this gives you something to think about, and I'll try and see if I can find you which issue that article by Marc was in.
