If you aren't willing to do so, then in my opinion, you shouldn't go back to teaching there. If it is his school, he is entitled to stipulate the curriculum and your opinion of whether or not certain FMA or JKD concepts are more appropriate is irrelevant, even if you do consider him to be close-minded because of it. Just throwing my pennies into the pot.... Silke ------------------------------ From: "StarrAvis" Date: Tue, 15 Aug 2000 11:06:21 -0400 Subject: the_dojang: RE: Helpng out and Ba Qua Stickfighter says: "Anyway he called me a few minutes ago and asked me to return to the Dojang because he needs help teaching he has started a new job and needs help. And he said he knew he could always rely on me and that I am a good martial artist." >> GP: I say give him a helping hand. And stay away from teaching the FMA's to those TKD students, as it will look like you are recruiting. Also it will confuse the students. Gary says: "So i'd like some feed back about style prefrences and reasoning, besides try and remember i am still kinda new at the whole martial arts bit.... what do you think is better for a beginer and why?">> GP: Ba Qua (Pa Kua) is really not for a "beginner" student. MY old kung-fu teacher would start a student with Tai Chi then go into Ba Qua. And if you have seen the circle being enacted by two proponents of the art, then you must realize that it takes a real long time to just to get the basics. I suggest studying a simpler art, such as Vee Arnis Jitsu and then later in your training branch off to Ba Qua. Of Course both of you will end up doing what your heart leads you to do, and that is the point. Let your heart lead you, not your mind (brain, logic). george petrotta ------------------------------ From: Meixner1@aol.com Date: Tue, 15 Aug 2000 11:39:15 EDT Subject: the_dojang: Re: Returning to TKD class If the instructor wants his school to be all traditional TKD without any of the other arts that you do; then IMHO you should not teach for him. If you come back and teach for him and combine some of the other arts then you could start more problems. Thats just my 2 cents on the subject. I, for one, believe Taekwondo (at least the way I've been taught it) to be one of the most effective arts I've studied. In our club, we also do Judo, and sometimes we mix things up by allowing palms to the headgear, knees to the hogu, takedowns, etc. Some things I've noticed are that the WTF footwork works very well. Muay Thai footwork is great, but notice that most stand-up fighters in NHB get taken down at least once, and most are using Thai style stand-up. TKD footwork and fast style kicking lets you get back in time to sprawl. Our kicks are fast and powerful. TKD jointlocks are more ballistic than Aikido style jointlocks, and having taken Hapkido for a number of years, I believe that more ballistic locks, preceded by strikes, are much more effective. Our hand techniques ARE effective, as long as we train to use them in a fight. There is nothing wrong with putting on the gloves to box it out, or even wearing goggles so you can spar with finger jabs. It won't wreck our TKD! Sorry for the pep talk...but it's true!
