You provide sound advice. Caveat: You will have to deal with my periodic forays into stories, humor (that others may not find funny), or tantalizing bits of information, and brief moments of lunacy. Ray: Thanks for the information on Cebu City, PI and Canoy Canete. If the trip comes off I will undertake the training. I have been to Cebu several times. However, received minimal training. I am certain that my inlaws know of the various Arnis/Escrima players since they previously introduced us to several champions--at their house no less !. The family is fairly well known in Cebu since the father was a prominent judge. Currrently one of the brothers ran for Mayor of Cebu. I did not realize the relevance of all of this until recently. I won't miss the opportunity to train again. Peace all, McD... P.S. Ray, continue to be the above the board moderator with sound policies. Kudos to Mr. Talbott as well. __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Yahoo! As usual, the event was well ran and was a blast from start to finish. I don't really attend tournaments for the competition, but for the comraderie. I was not dissapointed. Everyone was extremely friendly and outgoing. Chatting with Masters, Dans, and Gups from around the world is extremely interesting. Even Grandmaster Shin, a man who has the schedule of 10 extremely busy men combined, loves to talk and tell a great story. One of the best surprises of the week was walking into the hotel bar and seeing Grandmaster Shin. Halfway through the bow, I realized he was sitting next to no other than Grandmaster Bong Soo Han! While I've only known him through his movies, I then found out that he taught Hapkido to my instructor's instructor. Small world! It was hard to stop thinking about his role in Kentucky Fried Movie, but it was an honor to be in the presence of two great Masters. :) I know there's a few other WTSA folks on the list. Anyone else at Anaheim? Tang Soo!!! I believe in my own opinion I sholdnt cause I dont think I could not teach the way he intends. I am doing well teaching on my own and have some very faithful students of my own I owe my time to and I feel teaching for someone else may break into that time. Thanks everyone... cory ------------------------------ From: Ray Terry Date: Tue, 15 Aug 2000 14:20:49 PDT Subject: the_dojang: KATU vs. USTF Just curious... What is the latest with the two ITF orgs in the US, the USTF and the KATU? Are they both present to perform different functions for the ITF? Do they compete for the same members? ??? And >how did you do it? I'm in a similar situation, Steven. I recently (in Feb.) resumed my martial arts training after a long hiatus (I studied Shorin-Ryu as a youngster and I'm grudgingly approaching 30 now..) and I never was flexible. I joyously discovered a few months after resuming training (TKD style this time...) that I could actually touch my toes!! It must have been amusing to see my doing warmup stretching with a huge smile on my face at the simple fact, but there it was. All I did to get there was stretch in earnest every time. Each time I stretch, it's an opportunity to stretch my limits a little more. One day, I hope to actually be able to lean over when I stretch my legs out to the side as far as possible. In the meantime, I give it all I can and train to the best of my ability. Glad I'm not the only one fighting for flexibility. :o) Jerry Lynde ------------------------------ From: ICyrus8528@aol.com Date: Tue, 15 Aug 2000 21:58:05 EDT Subject: the_dojang: Re: The_Dojang-Digest V7 #543 Mr. Pratt: Maybe I can shed some light on the mystery of "18 Weapons (Techniques)". This reference according to my research goes back to the early origins of Buddhism. "The Bone-Marrow washing" and the "The Muscle-Tendon Change" was apparently introduced to Shaolin by Bodhidharma (who BTW, was not the first Indian missionary to visit Shaolin). However, I believe that he actually introduced was commonly referred to as the "18 Lohan". Lohan is derived from the ancient Buddhist Sanskrit term, "Arahant" which was earlier derived from "Arihan (those who subdue or attain victory over foes). The 18 Lohan according to Chinese sources originated from the "Lion Play School" of Ksetreya (derived from Ksetr: Power, an elite fighting corp of royal or noble-born warriors, the forerunners of the Hwa Rang) Vajramutki (Thunderbolt Closed/Clasped Hands). The 18 Lohan was also known in India as the "18 Subduings" or "18 Victors. The 18 Victors were the most important of the Indian Ksetreya Vajramutki forms which seemed to reflect the doctrine of the "18 Paramitas (Spiritually Perfecting Practices)" and the "18 Voidnesses of wisdom". The 18 Subduings essentially consist of 18 classical sets of mudra (ritual symbolic gestures or hand positions of the Arahants), each of which were combined with respiratory patterns, steps, muscle tension and relaxation, and specific meditation themes. I can go on with this but I wanted to keep it as brief as I could. Contact me personally for more info.
