We were blown away to say the least. I had a hard time picking a winner between your demo and the "Grease" demo put on by Atlanta Tang Soo Do, but I'm glad you guys won! p.s. How do I go about getting one of those t-shirts with the sparring polar bears? I'll trade for a Buckeye Tang Soo Do shirt:) Tang Soo! Well, I was the original poster about that T. Kurz book. I've just got the book and have started to adapt my stretching methods. > 1) Are the claims made by 'readers' on that web site true? > Basically that following that method seriously will allow > almost anyone to the front and side split? Well, there's several things that gives Kurz credibility to me. First, his book was recommended in Brad Appleton's Stretching and Flexibility FAQ. Second, his book is well researched. He has a fairly extensive bibliography and uses technical references throughout the book. Third, he demonstrates everything with pictures, and he demonstrates his impressive suspended split with pictures. More than that the introduction has a bunch of people that he shows doing the same. Also in Black Belt magazine he shows even more people in a full suspended split, and even has the famous (or is it infamous? ;^) ) George Dillman in a split. Now, he also gives some simple tests to see if you are capable of doing a full split. If you can't pass the tests, you may either have to stretch certain other areas (such as the back) or you may just have limited joint range and unable to "go to the max". His method primarily uses isometric stretching to get the big flexibility gains. He also uses a specific order of exersizes to get things to work. There is good technical documentation on isometric stretching. I've had a hard time adapting to his method. For the side split I was always taught to support my weight in the stretch -- Kurtz has you do it unsupported. The side benefit of this is that you strengthen the legs as well as stretch. But, thats a good thing! I'm just getting to the point where I can do a unsupported stretch to about the point I used to do it supported. So as I continue hopefully I'll work beyond my previous flexibility range. One point he makes in the book is that if the "experts" can't demonstrate the stretch -- then why listen to them? This is one thing we do in the martial arts -- always demonstrate the superior method. Kurtz demonstrates everything and thereby demonstrates the effectiveness of the method. That in itself is one reason to pay attention to what he has to say... The one comment I got on my posting was someone that started experiencing pain from all the isometric stretching. So they stopped doing the method, although they still do the morning stretching. I can't comment on how common that problem is. In the "question and answer" part of the book several people ask specific questions on their own flexibility gains. He gives suggestions that basically revolve around following the method more closely (for example not riding a bike). The spread of the questions and the answers he gives, also gives him more credibility to me. Since, it tells me his goal is to help people gain flexibility -- not just to impress. > 2) Is the book easy to follow? My native language is not English > which makes some subjects harder to read. For example, is the > book well illustrated? Is the language used easy to > understand for a non specialist? Etc. The book is well illustrated, and I would say it's fairly easy to read. The technical stuff is harder to follow, but the methodology is easy enough to follow. One chapter in the book is just question and answer. Questions from readers are answered by Kurtz. This part would be easy for you to follow. Anyway, the bottom line is that it's a worthwhile book. I'm thinking I probably need some other sources as well, but this is an excellent one to start with. (since this video will have a bunch of outside scenes) This means I won't be filming this weekend when the Combat Hapkido seminar is going on like I thought I would be. Would people that have attended one of these seminars please post or write to me in private about what is actually taught in these? I believe it is going to be both Combat Hapkido and ground grappling. I'd like to know what to expect, what I'd be paying for, etc. I really can't afford it right now, but at the same time would like to see what he is like in person. I would also like to see how he arranged his seminars to compare them with the ones I give. Any info would be great. Thank you! By way of background, I'm a journalist and I wrote an article on the Hitman affair for which I interviewed lawyers on both sides of the case. The official question I had, because I write for a trade publication covering the direct marketing industry, is can a catalog company (which Paladin is also) be held responsible for the use or misuse of its products and if so what are the limits if any of that liability. My personal question -- and both sides assured me I was being completely paranoid here -- is that if Paladin is found liable, could that then drive martial arts instruction underground. The plaintiff's attorney assured me not, because people, in his opinion, take up martial arts for exercise and self defense, not to (try to) kill people as would people who would have bought Hitman. As part of the story, I interviewed some lawyers for "impartial" views of the legal wrangling. The ones who knew what Paladin is were uncomfortable with the company and the books and videos it produced. Reading some of the decisions, I was left with the odd feeling that it was Paladin as a whole that was on trial and not just the book. By the way, if memory serves, the killer who bought the book did not seem to have followed any of the instructions he may have read there, if he did indeed read the book at all. And if it matters, someone at Paladin told me the check he paid with bounced. I do believe the that the Taeguk symbolics are based on the I-Ching. I could be wrong. The black belt forms start to take on more symbolic meaning than the taeguks.
