SCARS is essentially the introductory bits of San Soo Kung Fu. About up to maybe a green belt level. Hello Master Silz: Your dilemma is one shared by many. I have taught martial arts in my area for nearly 40 years (about thirty in my own Dojang), and your experience is like a recuring nightmare. In retrospect, and despite the feeling of being unappreciated, there are just too many of the wonderful times such as you describe with Natasha. That, and the love of our art, is what keeps us going! The strangest thing is that I have Masters and Instructors from all over the world who come to learn from me (and are willing to pay). My greatest rewards however DO come from the smiling faces of the children who know nothing about the financial issues between their parents and myself. Who could deny them just because their parents may not treat us correctly? I guess that is why I ran a Non Profit school for so many years. On the other hand, I admire the schools that manage to bring in 50 - 60 thoushand dollars per month. With that kind of mony I could also bring smiles to the faces of my loyal Instructors who deserve better. I am still working on a formula where I can do both. Anyone have shortcuts??? We are in the outer edges of Oklahoma City in a small but quickly growing city. We were kicked out of our old location last fall and due to very limited space available we were forced to build our own gym. Built a 4,000 sq. ft gym and did all the work we could ourselves. By doing a lot of the work ourselves we now only have loan payment around 900.00. Our students and families even came and helped. We now have lots more room and it is ours. While we were building we worked out in the local park for a month, then moved to my father-in-laws big shed where he keeps his motor home. It was a challenge during all this but the kids really liked working outside that one month. Our magic number for students is about 40. We offer family discounts so that makes the number change some. I would say about half of our students have more than one from the family coming to the gym. We have lots of parents attending also.
