As General Choi is rumored to > be stepping down as President of the ITF at the World Championships > in January, I haven't heard that, but it wouldn't suprise me. > Choi Jung Hwa becomes ITF President and the General accepts > appointment as WTF President. Choi, Jung Hwa as President of the ITF isn't wild speculation at all; it's almost certainly what happens when the General steps down. General Choi as president of the WTF is indeed 'wild' speculation - I think it would be very unlikely. It would essentially mean the absorption into the ITF of the WTF, which is an unlikely proposition on any number of counts. ;-) It's much more likely that the General simply retires. He practically lives on airplanes these days, he does almost nothing but fly around the world giving seminars. I got the strong impression (from talking to people at his seminar in Phoenix a few years back) that the General was getting rather weary of the schedule, the celebrity status, and so forth. > The unification process begins again? Like big business, Taekwon-Do > becomes globalized and marketed under different "brand" names? Well, the possible (re)unification of TKD is a different topic. Long regarded as being totally impossible, recent events (the General's return to South Korea two years ago, the improving relations between North and South Korea) have improved the unification prospects to merely "extremely difficult". Many (most? all?) ITF'ers are opposed to the WTF's sparring rules, which the WTF would probably want to hang on to. Many (most? all?) WTF'ers would be very reluctant to learn the ITF patterns and the "sine wave", two things the ITF is likely to insist on. While (re)unification is perhaps possible at this point, I have no idea what it would produce. ;-) - -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Dave Steffen Wave after wave will flow with the tide Dept. of Physics And bury the world as it does Colorado State University Tide after tide will flow and recede steffend@lamar.colostate.edu Leaving life to go on as it was... - Peart / RUSH "The reason that our people suffer in this way.... is that our ancestors failed to rule wisely". -General Choi, Hong Hi - -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Dave Steffen Wave after wave will flow with the tide Dept. of Physics And bury the world as it does Colorado State University Tide after tide will flow and recede steffend@lamar.colostate.edu Leaving life to go on as it was... - Peart / RUSH "The reason that our people suffer in this way.... is that our ancestors failed to rule wisely". -General Choi, Hong Hi ------------------------------ From: Ray Terry Date: Wed, 23 Aug 2000 19:31:12 PDT Subject: the_dojang: . ------------------------------ End of The_Dojang-Digest V7 #568 ******************************** It's a great day for Taekwondo!
