Choi ITF World Championships are the first week of July 2001 in Italy. Gen. Choi is supposed to retire during that event. He tried to retire two or so years ago but it didn't work out (not enough seniors could make the curise). Gen. Choi's son will almost certianly be taking over as president of the ITF. However, the congress of the ITF does have to vote on it. They haven't always voted the way the General has wanted. It will be interesting to see the response to Master (maybe Grand Master now) Choi's taking over. I know there is concern by some people over his felony conviction during the 1980's. Not sure how this will go over with some Grand Masters and Masters. Most of you know that I am a huge ITF and Gen. Choi supporter, but these are real issues that many of the rank and file ITF dans have discussed -- and not solved. Time will tell......... Lots of things I want to write, but having trouble squeezing it in right now. Here is a post I made to another list that has a thread going on realistic training. Thought some here might be interested too. Ah, so many things, so little time to spend on the key board sharing.... This will maybe be of help to the TKD and related instructors out there. How many times have you been in class, or watched a class where students were in a line in front of a bag and kick the bag and then go to the back of the line, or to the next bag or whatever. I've seen this in a number of TKD and kicking art schools. Student kicks the bag and is on the way to the end of the line before the foot is even on the ground. Just going through the motions. I don't let students do this. I still want them to throw the kick we are working on, and throw it well. But before they go to the end of the line, they have to do a series of hand/elbow/knee strikes to the bag. They do the kick, and then immediately follow with a continuous attack of several more blows. I emphasize that they cannot count on one blow or kick to finish an opponent and they better not get into the habit of throwing something and then turning their back. This is just one little drill to help make the training more realistic and practical for self-defense in an actual encounter. Grandmaster Ciriaco "Cacoy" Canete is my friend, instructor and former training partner. He is 82 (not 88) years old and is still an amazingly capable fighter. He and his older brothers (all now long gone) were a powerful force in the traditional martial art of Eskrima regaining popularity in the Philippines beginning in 1932. He splits his time these days between San Jose, Calif. and Cebu City, RP. His personal art is Eskrido, a blend of Doce Pares Eskrima, Aikido, Judo, Karate and boxing.
