I began TKD-Chung Do Kwan training in 1968 at a dojang run by to students of the late Master Hyun Young (Billy) Hong. In those days, the forms (Hyung) that we learned were all of Japanese orgin: Tiger Forms 1-2-3 (the same as Japanese Taikyoku forms), Pinan 1-5, Bassai, etc. I know that Tang Soo Do people still do those forms, but I am wondering if there are any other, long-time, Chung Do Kwan people on the list who had similar training in the "old days." One more thing: I once saw a photo of the Chung Do Kwan headquarters hanging on the wall in Master Hong's dojang. He told me that the Chung Do Kwan was at that time located in an abandoned church building. Anyone else know about this? TaeKwon! Hapki! That would have been the Si Chun Church Hall (Hope Wedding Hall) in Kyun-ji dong. Classes were held in the evenings. The WTA folks on the list may still be doing the old CDK forms. ??? We would gladly enter ITF events as well but so far there are no open ITF events in our country. I feel it would be great if both groups would keep their sets of patterns (which are in fact a sport on its own, separate from fighting), but allow fighters from other groups to compete in fighting. Just like in wrestling there are Greco-Roman and freestyle. I saw reports from events held e.g. in Great Britain where ITF people fought in WTF styled events and vice versa. However, until the politicians get their act together, I doubt that it will happen in the near future. Additional points: - - Paladin runs an annual sale of 20% off during the Christmas time period. - - Kelly Worden out of Takoma, WA., makes an updated Mook Jong that is padded; and, the hands and arms are moveable. Compared to the all wood models available by other manufacturers, a better approach with a padded training dummy is a great concept. - - I do use heavy bag for workouts. However, I added a Mook Jong for an added dimension, re: hand and foot techniques with a three dimensional aspect. - - Also good for knife, stick, and empty hand. Regarding the latter empty hand techniques, when employing three or four hand strike techniques in succession, the Mook Jong adds a realistic training modality. In my school, our GM holds a special seminar on a Saturday a couple weeks after the testing to go over anything he saw at testing that he wants to be changed/adjusted. This workout is open to all black belts, but it is specifically targeted at the candidates for promotion. After the seminar, belts are handed out at a special dinner. This dinner is still basically for the black belts and their families. This all occurs at our GM's school in Omaha. We also have a "presentation" in our local school for anyone who is promoted into or up through the black belt ranks. This basically involves announcing the promotion and each person promoted gives a short speech, usually with a message of thanks to anyone who helped them prepare and a few words of encouragement for all students that with the right attitude and technique, any one of them could be standing where that person is standing. The last time this happened in our local school, there were four people who were all promoted at once. (Out of six total black belts, that was pretty significant!) So we cut our class about 30 minutes short and had cake and punch to celebrate. But this is not the normal occurrence. While reaching black belt is definitely a milestone, I feel it is unnecessary to make a *huge* production out of the promotion. The people who it really means something to also know that it is just what i said: a milestone. In a sense, it is just like reaching the other ranks. It is not really the "black belt" that is significant, but the journey to get there. IMHO, Shaun M. Not sure, but one thing I do know [not much, I know :) ] is that some that advertise as being a 9th Dan under him may not be. One day a few years back I happened to mention to GM JI that I noticed a picture of him in the recent TKD Times awarding a 9th Dan to the other fellow in the picture with him. He seemed rather surprised by this fact and asked me to bring that issue in for him to review. When I did so he didn't say anything verbally, but seemed a bit angry and put off. So.?.?. Two we do know of at least two, Bong Soo Han and Dr. He-young Kimm.
