I have been visiting the several dojangs in the area and have frankly been unimpressed by the quality of the students. I personally believe that the best measure of the quality of a program is what kind of students it produces. In my previous studies this idea has always led me to outstanding instructors. Since mediocrity seems to be the order of the day among the practitioners in this area (though I mean no offense by this statement), does anyone on the list have any other ideas as to what I should look at in these schools so I can find the best possible program in which to study? Also, perhaps someone on the list is familiar with the instructors in my area and can recommend one? My new home is in Salt Lake City , Utah. I am a team player. However, I have just moved from Fort Detrick to the Pentagon and all my files are in boxes. I know the precise file and where the box is. Please allow a few days and I will forward. Additionally, I can provide Kelly Worden's telephone and his web site. McD... __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Yahoo! I went down to the basement and looked at the Wing Chun Dummy he made for me. His telephone number is 253-564-2867. He calls his school "Natural Spirit International". I have his website in my files. If you go to Kelly Wordern and Natural Spirit International via a search I am certain it will pop up. His website is good. He also provides a Wing Chun Dummy Training Tape with basic drills that are easy and effective. I talked with Mr. Worden and he is a down to earth, honorable guy. He has an interesting background. His brother was a "biker" and he ran in rough Tacoma, WA., crowds. He is highly regarded in Arnis/Escrima circles and is one of only several Americans to hold a Datu rank. Tell him that Ken McDonough referred you. I will look for the Wing Chun Dummy file located in the garage next to my coveted 57 Chevy Belair 2 Door Sport Coupe. I did a little research on various manufacturers of the Wing Chun Dummy. Expect to pay $500 to $900 for a good one. But, you can make your own for less. I haven't heard about that. It was a Canadian conviction of "conspiracy" re: a plot to asassinate a S. Korean politician. It occurred back in the late 80's, early 90's I believe. I have heard thru the grapevine that it was revenge for what the S. Korean gov't did to General Choi but that is only speculation. He did his time. When he was released he was presented with his 8th dan. I see this at end of every digest. I was wondering how many on the digest are USTU members? It seems Ray Terry is a member. I was wondering if you hold official position in state or national? You seem like big supporter of USTU. With respect Mike Placace >> Dear Mr. Placace and curious readers: I have been a reader of Mr. Terry's list for about two years and I know that Ray is not an employee or an "official" of the USTU. It seems, rather, that Mr. Terry is dedicated to doing things properly, appropriately, and officially as much as possible. If I may be so bold as to venture a comment about his apparent support of the USTU, it is simply due to the fact that the USTU is the sole national governing body for taekwondo in America operating under the formal mandate(s) of both the WTF and the USOC. (The WTF and USOC both operate in cooperation with the International Olympic Committee, as well. Furthermore, unlike most associations promoting martial arts in the US that appear to function with the personal aggrandizement and financial enrichment of its "Grandmaster," as their primary mission. Conversely, the USTU is a board-run, non-for-profit agency that exists to serve the taekwondo practitioners of America without financial gain to is founders and directors. I think Ray is wise to recognize the uniqueness of the USTU when it is viewed in comparison to the plethora of MA associations advertising their rank-certification programs and services on the pages of the typical Martial Arts rag. Naturally I could be wrong about Mr. Terry here and I stand ready to be flogged for it if need be. But these are the primary reasons I feel it's important for those of us in taekwondo to support and empower the USTU as it's truly the "Real Deal."
