Roberts" Date: Tue, 29 Aug 2000 10:37:23 -0400 Subject: the_dojang: the famous "Billy" Hong Andrew: I did not see those posts you refer to, but I think I can confidently say that they are NOT speaking of the same Billy Hong ! First, of all the many things I recall about Master Hong, I never heard any sort of tall tales such as what were apparently described in the post you refer to. Now, I may have been the ONLY person associated with Master Hong and his students who never heard such stories, but I rather doubt it. I think that must be a different "Billy" Hong! Secondly, the Billy Hong that I knew of, has been dead since 1983. He was murdered by the Soviets, along with over 200 other people, who had the bad misfortune to be aboard Korean Airlines flight 007, when the Soviets blasted it out of the skies over their "air space." Master Hong had won a Golf tournament in South Carolina where he lived, and the prize was an all expenses paid trip back home to Korea. He never made it. Thirdly, of the various Tae Kwon Do schools established througout the Southeastern United States back in the late 60's, the Clemson University Tae Kwon Do club is the most enduring and they have a web site up that has a picture of Master Hong. (Here is the URL if you would like to visit it: http://hubcap.clemson.edu/taekwondo/handbook/masterhong.html) Someone from there who knew him much better than I ever did could probably clarify whether or not we are talking about two different Billy Hongs, as I suspect we are. Ray, do you have that article? Well, not sure which one is being referred to. The one that I posted about the terrorist cell in Auckland, NZ, or the one Andrew mentioned about being in the Korea Herald? The one from Auckland is in issue v07.n577.
