Would you do more if you could? How about let's move the time back! I go three times a week for about two hours...and Tuesdays and Thursdays are killer because classes are from 2000-2200...and Thursdays are my ROTC uniform days! Let's hear it for moving the time back...but hey, it's better than not at all. Now, my question for people who have already been through the college sche-bang and people who have been in it for a couple years now...calling all ENGINEERS...how do you manage your time between annoying projects (done outside of class) and going to TKD (or your particular martial art)? P.S. - any of those "You might be an engineer if..." or anything else engineer-related would be greatly appreciated... - -- Kim Jones *joneskh@purdue.edu* Purdue University, Freshman Engineering http://icdweb.cc.purdue.edu/~joneskh ICQ: 52828008 AIM: LadyTimberland ------------------------------ From: "Rudy Timmerman" Date: Thu, 21 Sep 2000 02:29:19 -0400 Subject: the_dojang: Headbutts Discussion on the following post: > Thought I would throw this out to the list since Ray is looking for some > chatter. What is your opinion on head strikes/head butts? Headbutting always was a formal part of the curriculum in our school (and therefore I leave it in the curriculum); however, I have some reservations on too much repetition in striking hard objects with the head. There are just too many other tools to use that could perhaps do the job without the inevitable headaches you will enventually incurr. Even those who have incredible hard heads may eventually find that it is not a good idea to use the head for striking (or blocking). Evidence of this was brought home big time by the great Ali. Even soccer (football in some areas) associations are taking a serious look into the long term health ramifications of young people "heading" the ball. While I used to break bricks with my head, I now prohibit headbutts in demonstrations etc. to prevent some kid going home to "show off" his newfound skill. Whenever we do practice "Pak Sool", we do it in class (and only with advanced students). Headbutts (IMHO) are not something for the novice student, and I strongly suggest you use other tools to do the job. Well everyone and "William," since I am in the military I should tell you my rank... My name is Gordon Smith II. I am a Staff Sergeant (SSgt) in the United States Air Force. My current job is Non-Commissioned Officer In-Charge (NCOIC) of Security Forces Training. I am stationed at Volkel Air Base in The Netherlands (Holland). Before I go any further...I live 45 minutes from Amsterdam and (YES) all of the stories about Amsterdam are true...Back to Budo...As for Sarah's Quiz, I turned 28 on 12 September. I just received my 1st Dan Black Belt in Han Mu Do from Grandmaster, Dr. He-Young Kimm, Founder of Han Mu Do and President of the Han Do Group. I'm sure that most of you mature (old school) Korean martial arts practitioners know of him. On 16 and 17 September Dr. Kimm came here along with his son Donald Kimm and held the 8th International European Han Mu Do Seminar. The first day of training lasted from 10:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Afterwards, all Dan exams began. Needless to say I am still recovering from that first day. The entire seminar was great! This was the 3rd European Seminar I had the pleasure of attending with Dr. Kimm. We had representatives from England, Holland (of-course), Belgium, France, Italy, and Switzerland. England arrived late because of the "Gasoline Blockade," but all went well. Also in attendance was Grandmaster Won, President of the German ITF. You could feel the "ki-energy" emanating from these two Grandmasters. Our dojang is the European Han Mu Do Headquarters. We train every Tuesday from 9-10 p.m. and Thursday from 9:30-10:30 p.m. Saturday is specialized training for the more serious practitioners from 10:30 a.m.-1:00 p.m. This is when we connect our techniques with street effectiveness. I would love to train all day everyday, but between the military and martial arts I have to see my wife and children sometime. If there are any other military members or Han Mu Do brother's and sister's out there...send out some chatter! ------------------------------ From: J T Date: Thu, 21 Sep 2000 05:51:13 -0700 (PDT) Subject: the_dojang: Translations "I am also getting a copy of Hwang Kee's 1958 book. I do Tae Kwon Do (GTI) in Oxford which is great - I am not under 18 (age 28) and I train 2 a week, one and a half hours per session and I would like to do more if possible. I have a grading coming up so I am going to try and do some training outside the regular classes in preparation for that. The real reason I am posting to this list is that I was wondering whether anybody knew whether and when TKD in the Olympics would be shown on the television in the UK. Also I would be interested to know generally whether there are many people based in the UK who use this list.
